About The Position

The Query Processing team at Ocient handles parsing, validating, optimizing, and executing SQL queries. The team ensures queries are correct and valid, lowers SQL into an optimal executable representation, and efficiently executes resulting plans over petabytes of data across tens to hundreds of nodes. It collaborates with Test Infrastructure, Quality Assurance, and Customer Operations to evaluate and improve performance on existing and new customer workloads, while implementing functionality to enable customer success.

The role is for a software engineer with strong interests in performance optimization and analysis who enjoys analytical thinking and tackling abstract problems in distributed database systems. The engineer contributes to query-processing efficiency through system design, implementation, and performance analysis; participates in code reviews and design discussions; investigates new ideas, tools, and techniques to improve performance and reliability; helps triage and debug production and test issues; contributes to team processes and an inclusive work environment; and supports fellow engineers through collaboration, pairing, and knowledge sharing.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s, master’s, or PhD in computer science, computer engineering, or a related technical field.
• At least 2 years of industry experience writing code to solve complex problems using an object-oriented programming language such as C++, Java, or C#.
• At least 1 year of work experience as a software engineer using Python or a similar test infrastructure language, and experience measuring performance in compiled languages.
• Strong understanding and application of data structures and algorithms.
• Experience developing on Linux and in large, version-controlled projects.
• Ability to speak and write English fluently.

• Direct experience testing the performance of data warehouses and data analytics engines.
