About The Position

As a Software Engineer II within NextGear Capital, you will help build and evolve the systems, applications, and digital capabilities that power an automotive inventory finance business. You will work with a collaborative product and engineering team to develop solutions supporting business operations, customer experiences, and technology innovation. The role involves taking ownership of discrete features and system components while developing technical depth and business understanding. You will work with product managers, architects, engineers, and business stakeholders to design, build, test, and deliver software. AI-assisted development is an important part of the team's approach, and you will use AI tools and workflows throughout the software development lifecycle while remaining accountable for design decisions, code quality, security, and outcomes. You may contribute across the full stack, participate in technical design and product delivery discussions, and help evolve software engineering practices. The position is hybrid, with the ability to work remotely part of the week, and follows a day shift. The position requires passing a pre-employment drug test; the company does not currently test for marijuana for this position.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline and 2 years of experience in a related field; alternatively, a master’s degree and up to 2 years of experience, or 14 years of experience in a related field.
  • Consistent, effective use of AI coding assistants such as GitHub Copilot, Claude, or Cursor across the SDLC; ability to provide context, iterate on outputs, and critically evaluate quality and correctness.
  • Sound analytical judgment and ability to troubleshoot and resolve moderately complex issues with limited guidance.
  • Working proficiency across the supported stack, such as a backend framework (e.g., Java/Spring Boot), a frontend framework (e.g., React), and SQL/relational data modeling, with depth in at least one layer.
  • Comfort with Git workflows, branching strategies, and collaborative development practices.
  • Working knowledge of logging, metrics, and monitoring tools, such as New Relic, dashboards, and alerts.
  • Ability to clearly explain technical tradeoffs and status to teammates and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment drug test.

Nice To Haves

  • Spec Driven Development (SDD) experience.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with AI agents and tools to build, test, and deploy software across the SDLC, providing context and maintaining ownership of output quality.
  • Experiment with prompt engineering and share insights about tool usage with the team.
  • Participate in design and development discussions, contributing a software engineering perspective to desired outcomes.
  • Assist with feature and element estimation, including technical input, resources, time, and anticipated outcomes.
  • Develop and implement unit and system tests for integral code paths and follow secure coding practices.
  • Provide technical support, troubleshooting, and enhancements for existing and new application and system features.
  • Use observability tools, including logs, metrics, traces, and dashboards, to monitor system health, diagnose issues, and validate production changes.
  • Document processes, best practices, and methodologies to support repeatability.
  • Keep team members, managers, product owners, and other stakeholders informed about status, challenges, and concerns.
  • Participate in code reviews, giving and receiving feedback.
  • Take ownership of assigned work and drive it to completion with minimal oversight; stay engaged with teammates, raise blockers early, and contribute to shared team goals.
  • Produce working software each sprint that meets the definition of done, delivers expected value, and stays within engineering constraints.
  • Maintain effective AI-augmented workflows that improve speed and quality, and share effective practices with the team.
  • Deliver maintainable, testable, and performant software that uses existing patterns, meets client needs, and supports consistent estimates.
  • Grow toward independent ownership of features and system elements.
  • Surface changes in direction that affect time, effort, cost, or scope promptly.
  • Identify and act on opportunities for automation, improvement, or learning with minimal guidance.
