Microsoft•Redmond, WA
•$102,100 - $261,000

About The Position

Microsoft is hiring a backend engineer for the Azure Monitor team to build and evolve systems that power observability and health across Azure. The team develops services that help customers monitor, detect, troubleshoot, and mitigate service issues through an increasingly agentic experience. Azure Monitor includes Log Analytics, Application Insights, Container Insights, Hosted Prometheus, Azure Managed Grafana, and other services, and is the platform upon which Microsoft Sentinel is built. Its services process more than 1.5 exabytes of logs daily and track over 100 billion active metrics. The role focuses on owning and improving globally distributed backend systems at scale, driving architecture across teams, and strengthening reliability and security. The engineer will build highly available services and automation for large-scale telemetry workloads, develop capabilities for telemetry collection and data access, and help apply AI-assisted and agentic capabilities safely to infrastructure operations. The team values collaboration, rapid delivery, attention to detail, accountability, creativity, and technical excellence.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related technical field and at least 2 years of technical engineering experience coding in languages including, but not limited to, C#, Java, .NET, or Python, or equivalent experience.
  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer, and/or government security screening requirements, including passing the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire or transfer and every two years thereafter.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree in Computer Science or a related technical field and at least 6 years of technical engineering experience coding in languages including, but not limited to, C#, Java, .NET, or Python; or a bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related technical field and at least 8 years of such experience; or equivalent experience.
  • Experience with cloud-native infrastructure, distributed systems, or large-scale production services.
  • Experience improving reliability, security, observability, networking, or operational excellence for live services.
  • Experience partnering across teams to deliver infrastructure capabilities with clear ownership and supportability.

Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, test, deploy, and operate highly available distributed services and automation used to configure and migrate large-scale telemetry workloads across the fleet.
  • Build and enhance APIs, tools, and subsystems for telemetry collection, routing, storage, and efficient data access.
  • Integrate advanced capabilities, such as machine learning–based anomaly detection and data validation, to improve platform intelligence and insights.
  • Implement monitoring, alerting, and diagnostics, and ensure production services run reliably.
  • Participate in on-call rotations and incident response.
  • Collaborate with partner teams to deliver end-to-end observability solutions.
  • Contribute to design reviews and best practices that uphold high engineering standards.
  • Champion agentic development practices and share repeatable patterns that improve engineering velocity and quality.
  • Train and evolve AI to assist with non-coding scenarios such as site reliability engineering, support, and administration.

Benefits

  • Certain roles may be eligible for benefits and other compensation; additional benefits and pay information is available through the linked Microsoft careers page.
