About The Position

MISO is hiring a Software Engineer I. This role builds and supports sustainable, practical solutions to complex challenges in MISO’s forward markets while working closely with engineers, data scientists, and advisors across the Forward Market Solutions (FMS) team. You’ll collaborate with leaders throughout MISO to deliver high‑quality, data‑driven tools that modernize market operations, integrate AI, and enhance user‑interactive applications that scale with the rapidly evolving energy industry. As a key liaison with our agile Software Engineering teams, you will help ensure that new solutions align with real operational needs and add meaningful value. The tools and insights developed by this team strengthen situational awareness, improve decision‑making, and support our mission of optimizing markets, reducing risk, and delivering reliable energy to the region. Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science or related fields (or 4+ years of equivalent experience).
  • Strong Python programming skills (Flask preferred), with required experience in Git, SQL/PL‑SQL, and scripting languages.
  • Ability to analyze complex data, interpret results, and work effectively with reporting applications.
  • Experience with Active Data Guard.
  • Excellent customer‑facing communication skills with the ability to collaborate, build consensus, and work as part of a high‑performing team.
  • AI-native engineering: Experience applying tools such as GitHub Copilot, Claude, or similar AI-assisted development platforms across implementation, testing, review, documentation, and troubleshooting workflows.

Nice To Haves

  • Kubernetes, Docker, and Java are a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Designing, developing, and maintaining high‑performance applications that support MISO Operations and forward markets.
  • Coding, testing, debugging, documenting and deploying new and modified software to meet business, operational, and compliance requirements.
  • Collaborating with Operations teams and business stakeholders to define requirements, enhance applications, and deliver tools that improve situational awareness and decision‑making.
  • Translating business needs into technical designs and ensuring code integrity through appropriate controls, checks, and validation.
  • Developing solutions to complex issues, communicating recommendations to stakeholders, and implementing effective courses of action.
  • Supporting operational tools and processes as needed, including participating in on‑call rotations and providing timely, customer‑focused assistance.
