Software Engineer I

Simmonds Precision•Vergennes, VT

About The Position

The Software Engineer will help develop precise, intelligent, and secure software for Monitoring and Actuation Systems while supporting the reliability of existing production software and engineering next-generation mission-critical solutions. The role focuses on Health Usage Monitoring Systems (HUMS), which help aircraft operators analyze fleet condition, detect emerging mechanical anomalies, and optimize maintenance schedules, and Aircraft Actuation Systems, which provide deterministic, high-precision movement across flight control surfaces. The engineer will join the Next Generation Engineering Team, a collaborative group developing HUMS and actuation technologies through hands-on experimentation and iterative engineering. The work includes embedded flight software for commercial and military aircraft, integration with systems and hardware teams, AI-assisted onboard features, compliance with aviation safety standards, and participation in testing and flight-test activities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) major, obtained by the start date.
  • Relevant experience may be obtained through on-the-job experience, research, coursework, or projects.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior internship, co-op, or work experience.
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills and a desire to work effectively within dynamic teams to solve challenging problems.
  • A basic understanding of aircraft operational fundamentals is highly desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and optimize embedded flight software for safety-critical systems used in commercial aircraft and military platforms.
  • Write high-performance, deterministic code and debug and validate it using simulation tools.
  • Collaborate with systems engineers and hardware teams to deliver integrated solutions that meet aviation safety, performance, and certification requirements.
  • Implement and support AI-assisted onboard features.
  • Debug and validate systems using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, hardware debuggers, simulation, and hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) environments.
  • Ensure compliance with aviation safety standards such as DO-178 and follow secure coding and cyber-resilience practices.
  • Participate in flight-test operations, lab testing, and simulation runs to evaluate performance under real-world and mission-critical conditions.
  • Help ensure the reliability of existing production software while engineering next-generation solutions.
