Software Engineer, Full Stack

Shepherd•San Francisco, CA
•$170,000 - $400,000

About The Position

Shepherd is hiring a Software Engineer to build core infrastructure behind underwriting, pricing, and policy workflows. The systems built in this role will affect revenue, loss ratios, and the company’s ability to scale. The engineer will work closely with engineers, actuaries, and underwriters to turn complex real-world logic—often starting in Excel—into clean, durable production systems. This is an ownership-heavy role requiring first-principles reasoning, fast delivery, and improvement of broken systems. The role focuses on foundational backend systems and decision infrastructure, while contributing to architectural choices that support growth. Shepherd’s technology stack includes React, Next.js, TypeScript, GraphQL with Apollo, Node.js, PostgreSQL, and Redis. The company describes its work as modernizing commercial insurance through software, data, AI, and underwriting expertise.

Requirements

  • At least 4 years of professional software engineering experience.
  • Strong backend experience in TypeScript, Python, or a similar language.
  • Experience designing APIs and working with data-heavy systems.
  • Comfort operating in ambiguous, high-responsibility environments.
  • A bias toward ownership and shipping.
  • Good judgment about when to move quickly and when to slow down.

Responsibilities

  • Build and own backend systems for pricing models, underwriting workflows, and policy lifecycle infrastructure.
  • Translate complex actuarial and underwriting logic into maintainable, production-grade services.
  • Improve the performance and reliability of core rating and decision systems.
  • Contribute to architectural decisions that establish the foundation for scaling.
  • Work directly with domain experts to define appropriate abstractions, not merely implement tickets.
  • Maintain a high standard for code quality, simplicity, and long-term maintainability.

Benefits

  • 100% employer contribution to health, dental, and vision coverage.
  • Fertility benefits and family-building support.
  • Flexible PTO.
  • Daily lunches, dinners, and snacks.
  • Offices in San Francisco, New York City, Dallas-Fort Worth, Chicago, and Los Angeles.
  • Professional development, including access to premium coaching and leadership development.
  • Competitive 401(k) plan.
  • Dog-friendly San Francisco office.
