Software Engineer, Energy Management

Fluidstack•Austin, TX
•$250,000 - $300,000

About The Position

Fluidstack is building civilization-scale infrastructure for AI, focusing on delivering 10 to 100s of GWs of compute faster than anyone else. This involves rethinking every layer of the stack, from acquiring power and designing data centers to operating them. The company hires individuals who are deeply committed to this mission and operate with autonomy, urgency, first-principles reasoning, and a passion for solving significant problems. The Facility Controls Team specifically builds the control systems for Fluidstack's data centers, encompassing real-time load control, MEP and behind-the-meter integration, automated commissioning, and autonomous deployment. Key challenges include delivering controls for gigawatt-scale data centers, owning real-time load control and integration, automating commissioning, and driving autonomous deployment.

Requirements

  • Experience with high-throughput messaging systems (NATS, Kafka, or equivalent) at scale, with an understanding of their failure modes.
  • Experience designing time-series data models in ClickHouse, TimescaleDB, or comparable systems, understanding tradeoffs between write throughput, query performance, and schema evolution.
  • Experience instrumenting production services with observability tooling (Prometheus, Grafana, or equivalent), treating metrics and alerting as integral to shipping code.
  • Experience building and owning production services that other teams depend on, with a commitment to not shipping code that would be unacceptable to maintain at 3am.
  • Proficiency in designing systems, naming patterns, explaining rejected alternatives, and refactoring designs when they no longer fit the problem.
  • Ability to draw boundaries (interfaces, modules, failure domains) to ensure service degradation rather than failure when dependencies go down.
  • Experience writing tests that effectively catch feared failures.
  • Experience across the full signal chain from device to database, with a non-negotiable approach to data integrity.
  • Ability to work backwards from device-level constraints to build correct-by-design pipelines and handle stale versus wrong data appropriately.
  • A proactive and urgent approach to resolving issues in production pipelines.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Go, NATS, and Redis.
  • Familiarity with industrial and utility protocols such as DNP3, Modbus TCP, and OPC UA.
  • Experience with Kubernetes and ArgoCD for production service deployment.
  • Experience with real-time control and dispatch systems (SCADA, EMS, power plant controllers).
  • Experience with real-time dashboarding using tools like Grafana.

Responsibilities

  • Build and own the facility side of the energy control contract, including production services like the protocol layer, gateway service, and API for third-party plant controllers.
  • Design and evolve the messaging and state layer, which computes facility load intent from live telemetry and publishes it with a forecast every second.
  • Own the data contracts and engineering standards that other teams build against, ensuring consistency across new sites and counterparties.
  • Build the constraint execution path that determines facility capabilities and timelines in response to incoming requests, with deadlines measured in seconds.
  • Develop observability systems to prove production conformance, including per-stage latency, staleness, and watchdog health, to identify issues before they become incidents.

Benefits

  • Commitment to pay equity and transparency.
  • Equal Employment Opportunity Employer status.
