About The Position

DeepX is a Tokyo-based technology company that automates heavy machinery. Its work includes automating point-to-point mobile-crane operations in collaboration with Tadano and automating an excavator with Fujita. The company addresses labor shortages and has an international team whose internal language is English. DeepX values diverse perspectives, open communication, and work-life balance, and does not expect overtime. The Core System team develops the software platform and tools that support DeepX’s heavy-machinery automation applications. Its scope includes the robotics framework, sensor and hardware abstraction layers, integration infrastructure, middleware, and system-level orchestration. The Core System Engineer designs and implements how the automation system works together, hardens it for real-world operation, and validates it hands-on at work sites where safety is paramount. The role works across the robotics stack and closely with domain teams to deliver production-grade automation on real customer machines. Robotics experience is helpful, but strong engineering skills and curiosity about the system as a whole are emphasized. The role offers broad ownership in a small team, from system design through field validation, on autonomous heavy machinery deployed at customer sites.

Requirements

  • Professional experience developing production software in modern C++ on Linux.
  • Experience building, integrating, or debugging systems in which multiple components interact at runtime, such as robotics, automotive, embedded, industrial automation, or distributed systems.
  • Willingness to work on-site at customer locations as project needs require, including in outdoor and industrial environments, and to travel.
  • Working proficiency in English.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with ROS2, especially designing node architecture and interfaces for larger applications.
  • Hands-on field testing of robotic, vehicle, or industrial systems, including integration, stability, safety, and performance.
  • Experience developing hardware drivers or low-level infrastructure, including CAN bus, PLCs, industrial protocols, or network communication such as TCP/UDP and sockets.
  • Proficiency in Python.
  • Familiarity with perception, control, or planning.
  • Experience defining test strategies for system reliability.
  • Practical experience with Docker.
  • Proficiency in Japanese.

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement system orchestration, including state machines, behavior trees, high-level behavior management, safety mechanisms, and error handling.
  • Lead integration of perception, control, and planning modules with hardware, the UI, and external systems, collaborating with the teams responsible for those components and ensuring reliable runtime operation.
  • Contribute to the design of ROS2 node architecture, interfaces, and configuration packages used by automation applications.
  • Develop machine-platform components, including drivers and parsers for proprietary and third-party hardware.
  • Build logging, monitoring, and introspection tools to make integration and field operations faster, safer, and less costly.
  • Validate work on real machines through hardware testing and field deployments.

Benefits

  • Competitive salary.
  • Full-flex work hours and a hybrid work model.
  • Support and training for language and technical skills.
  • Complete health, pension, and social insurance.
  • Fully covered commuting expenses.
  • Company laptop and smartphone.
  • Visa support.
  • Two days off per week.
  • Year-end and New Year holidays.
  • 10 days of annual paid leave granted on the first day, increasing with tenure.
  • National holiday leave separate from annual paid leave, which may be taken on the holidays themselves or another suitable day.
  • Sick leave.
  • Parental leave.
  • Nursing care leave.
  • Congratulatory and condolence leave.
