About The Position

DeepX is a Tokyo-based technology company developing automation for heavy machinery, including mobile cranes and excavators. Its international team uses English internally and works to address labor shortages through automation. The company values diverse perspectives, work-life balance, and open communication, and does not expect overtime. The Core System team builds the software platform and tools behind DeepX’s heavy-machinery automation applications. Its work spans the robotics framework, sensor and hardware abstraction layers, integration infrastructure, middleware, and system-level orchestration. The Senior Software Engineer will design and implement how the automation system fits together, build integration components, and make systems robust for real-world operation. The role includes hands-on hardware testing and field validation at work sites, where safety is paramount. This role calls for a software engineer with broad robotics knowledge who can reason across the stack, collaborate with other domain teams, and help deliver production-grade automation systems. In a small team, the engineer will have broad ownership from system design through field validation, working on autonomous heavy machinery deployed at customer sites.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science, Robotics, or a closely related engineering field.
  • Strong software engineering fundamentals, including practical experience in a highly collaborative codebase.
  • Professional experience with C++ and proficiency in Python.
  • Experience developing in a Linux environment.
  • Hands-on experience with robotics frameworks such as ROS/ROS2 or an equivalent framework.
  • Working understanding of core robotics domains: hardware, perception, control, and planning.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to proactively engage with stakeholders across teams.
  • Proven ability to manage tasks effectively and translate business and project needs into clear, actionable engineering steps.
  • Proficiency in English.

Nice To Haves

  • Demonstrated ability to lead the design of scalable robotics applications, particularly those built on ROS2.
  • Ability to work autonomously and drive technical decisions with only high-level direction.
  • Experience defining and leading robust testing strategies to ensure system reliability and stability.
  • Hands-on field-testing experience validating system integration, stability, safety, and performance.
  • Experience developing hardware drivers and low-level infrastructure.
  • Working knowledge of CAN bus communication, PLC programming, and industrial interface or protocol design.
  • Fundamental knowledge of network protocols, such as TCP/IP, UDP, and socket communications.
  • Good understanding of containerization and practical experience using Docker.
  • Familiarity with Agile and Scrum methodologies.
  • Proficiency in Japanese.
  • Deep expertise in a core robotics domain.

Responsibilities

  • Architect and implement application-level orchestration, including state machines, behavior trees, high-level system behavior management, safety mechanisms, and error handling.
  • Lead integration of perception, control, and planning modules with hardware, UI, and external systems, collaborating with the teams that own those components and ensuring reliable runtime operation.
  • Design and own the ROS2 node architecture, interfaces, launch packages, and configuration packages used by DeepX automation applications.
  • Develop machine-platform components, including drivers and parsers for proprietary and third-party hardware.
  • Build logging, monitoring, and introspection tools to make integration and field operations faster, safer, and less costly.
  • Validate work on real machines through hardware testing and field deployments.

Benefits

  • Competitive salary.
  • Full-flex work hours and a hybrid work model.
  • Support and training for language and technical skills.
  • Health, pension, and social insurance.
  • Fully covered commuting expenses.
  • Company laptop and smartphone.
  • Visa support.
  • Two days off per week.
  • Year-end and New Year holidays.
  • 10 days of annual paid leave granted on the first day, increasing with tenure.
  • National holiday leave separate from annual paid leave, which may be taken on the holidays themselves or another suitable day.
  • Sick leave.
  • Parental leave.
  • Nursing care leave.
  • Congratulatory and condolence leave.
