About The Position

The Software Development Engineer will join Visa’s Product Reliability Engineering (PRE) team, a software engineering organization responsible for building and evolving automation, infrastructure, data platforms, and reliability capabilities supporting Visa’s global payment systems. The role focuses on infrastructure as code, reliability engineering, and automation for systems processing real-time transactions at global scale. The engineer will develop end-to-end deployment and infrastructure automation, write production-grade Python and potentially Go or Bash, and build release-management frameworks. The position also supports relational database platforms, including database operations, schema and architecture contributions, performance optimization, CI/CD for schema changes, and monitoring. Other responsibilities include building GenAI-powered engineering assistants and integrating LLMs into observability and incident-response workflows; developing dashboards, alerts, and metrics; and contributing to self-healing and auto-scaling systems. The role supports secure, highly available cloud-native infrastructure and participates in deployment strategies, threat modeling, vulnerability remediation, and audit readiness. The engineer works within Agile squads, documents operational and engineering guidance, and participates in supported on-call rotations. Visa requires at least three days in the office; the Hiring Manager will confirm the expected days. The position is performed in an office setting and requires travel 5–10% of the time.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or at least 3 years of relevant work experience.
  • Foundational knowledge of data structures, algorithms, and systems design.
  • Proficiency in Python and comfort writing scripts or tools in at least one additional language such as Go, Java, or Bash.
  • Foundational understanding of relational databases, including SQL, data modeling, query optimization, and database connectivity troubleshooting.
  • Familiarity with Linux/Unix environments and command-line tools.
  • Understanding of CI/CD principles and modern software delivery pipelines.
  • At least 3 days of in-office work; the Hiring Manager will confirm which days.
  • Ability to perform work in an office setting, including sitting and standing at a desk, communicating in person and by telephone, and frequently operating standard office equipment such as telephones and computers.
  • Ability to travel 5–10% of the time.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field; 2023–2025 graduates preferred, and December 2025 graduates welcome.
  • Exposure to cloud platforms such as AWS, GCP, or Azure and conceptual understanding of Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Curiosity about GenAI platforms and agentic systems such as OpenAI, Anthropic Claude, or LangChain; hands-on exposure is a plus.
  • Experience with infrastructure-as-code tools such as Terraform, Ansible, or Pulumi, including through coursework, capstone work, or an internship.
  • Experience with database CI/CD tooling, particularly Liquibase.
  • Experience with observability tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, Splunk, ELK, or Datadog.
  • Database administration exposure, including backup and recovery, performance tuning, index management, or replication monitoring.
  • Familiarity with Git workflows and DevOps toolchains such as Jenkins, GitHub Actions, or ArgoCD.
  • Academic or project experience with ML frameworks such as scikit-learn, PyTorch, LangChain, or LangGraph.
  • Understanding of networking fundamentals such as DNS, load balancing, service mesh, or TCP/IP.
  • A GitHub profile, personal project, hackathon entry, or open-source contribution demonstrating how the candidate thinks and builds.

Responsibilities

  • Design and deliver automation for deployment pipelines, infrastructure provisioning, and release orchestration.
  • Write production-grade Python and use Go or Bash where appropriate to reduce toil and manual intervention.
  • Develop modular frameworks for release scheduling, validation, rollback, and reporting across the software delivery lifecycle.
  • Support the build, deployment, and operation of relational database systems, contributing to schema design, architecture decisions, and solution engineering.
  • Perform database patching, upgrades, backups, and recovery to maintain availability and integrity.
  • Optimize database query performance through index tuning, execution-plan analysis, and replication monitoring.
  • Automate database tasks and configuration management, and contribute to CI/CD pipelines that manage schema changes across TEST and PROD environments.
  • Build monitoring dashboards to identify database anomalies and surface health signals before incidents occur.
  • Build GenAI-powered engineering assistants for deployment orchestration, release governance, and environment lifecycle management.
  • Integrate LLMs into observability, incident response, and developer-support workflows; contribute to prompt engineering, model fine-tuning, and agentic automation.
  • Build dashboards, alerts, and metrics for globally distributed systems using observability tools.
  • Analyze system performance and availability data and use findings to improve infrastructure and prevent incidents.
  • Contribute to self-healing and auto-scaling capabilities.
  • Help ensure infrastructure and data platforms meet security and compliance standards.
  • Support zero-downtime deployment strategies and high-availability architectures.
  • Participate in threat modeling, vulnerability remediation, and audit-readiness activities.
  • Work in Agile squads with engineers, product managers, and global PRE peers through planning, reviews, and release discussions.
  • Document runbooks, standard operating procedures, and engineering guides.
  • Participate in on-call rotations with support and mentorship.
