About The Position

The Software Development Engineer will join Visa’s Product Reliability Engineering (PRE) team, a software engineering organization focused on infrastructure as code, reliability, and automation. The role involves building, automating, and evolving systems that support Visa’s global payment infrastructure and real-time transactions. The engineer will work across deployment automation, data platforms, agentic AI and machine-learning tools, observability, reliability, and security, while collaborating with Agile teams and participating in supported on-call rotations. The position includes developing production-grade automation and release frameworks; supporting relational database platforms and real-time event streaming; carrying out database health operations and performance optimization; and contributing to database automation and CI/CD. It also involves building AI-powered engineering assistants, integrating LLMs into observability and incident response, creating monitoring dashboards, improving system resilience, and supporting secure, high-availability infrastructure. The role is based in an office setting and requires at least three days in the office. Travel is required 5–10% of the time. Work hours vary according to departmental needs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or at least 3 years of relevant work experience.
  • At least 3 days in the office; specific days will be confirmed by the Hiring Manager.
  • Ability to participate in on-call rotations.
  • The position requires travel 5–10% of the time.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field; 2023–2025 graduates preferred, and December 2025 graduates welcome.
  • Foundational knowledge of data structures, algorithms, and systems design, including complexity, tradeoffs, and failure modes.
  • Proficiency in Python and comfort writing scripts or tools in another language such as Go, Java, or Bash.
  • Foundational understanding of relational databases, including SQL, data modeling, query optimization, and database connectivity troubleshooting.
  • Familiarity with Linux/Unix environments and command-line tools.
  • Exposure to AWS, GCP, or Azure and conceptual understanding of Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Understanding of CI/CD principles and modern software delivery pipelines.
  • Curiosity about GenAI platforms and agentic systems such as OpenAI, Anthropic Claude, or LangChain; hands-on exposure is a plus.
  • Hands-on experience with infrastructure-as-code tools such as Terraform, Ansible, or Pulumi, including through coursework, capstones, or internships.
  • Experience with database CI/CD tooling, particularly Liquibase.
  • Experience with observability tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, Splunk, ELK, or Datadog.
  • Database administration exposure, including backup and recovery, performance tuning, index management, or replication monitoring.
  • Familiarity with Git workflows and DevOps toolchains such as Jenkins, GitHub Actions, or ArgoCD.
  • Academic or project experience with ML frameworks such as scikit-learn, PyTorch, LangChain, or LangGraph.
  • Understanding of networking fundamentals such as DNS, load balancing, service mesh, or TCP/IP.
  • A GitHub profile, personal project, hackathon entry, or open-source contribution demonstrating how the candidate thinks and builds.

Responsibilities

  • Design and deliver end-to-end automation for deployment pipelines, infrastructure provisioning, and release orchestration.
  • Write production-grade Python and use Go or Bash where appropriate to reduce toil and manual intervention.
  • Develop modular frameworks for release scheduling, validation, rollback, and reporting across the software delivery lifecycle.
  • Support the build, deployment, and operation of relational database systems, including schema design, architecture decisions, and solution engineering.
  • Gain exposure to real-time event-streaming architectures supporting payment processing.
  • Perform database patching, upgrades, backups, and recovery to maintain availability and integrity.
  • Optimize queries through index tuning, execution-plan analysis, and replication monitoring.
  • Automate database tasks and configuration management with tools such as Ansible and Liquibase, and contribute to CI/CD pipelines for schema changes across TEST and PROD.
  • Build predictive and reactive monitoring dashboards for database anomalies.
  • Build GenAI-powered engineering assistants for deployment orchestration, release governance, and environment lifecycle management.
  • Integrate LLMs into observability, incident-response, and developer-support workflows.
  • Contribute to prompt engineering, model fine-tuning, and agentic automation initiatives.
  • Build dashboards, alerts, and metrics using tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, Splunk, or ELK.
  • Analyze system performance and availability data and use findings to improve infrastructure and prevent incidents.
  • Contribute to self-healing and auto-scaling capabilities.
  • Ensure infrastructure and data platforms meet security and compliance standards for cloud-native deployments.
  • Support zero-downtime deployment strategies and high-availability architectures.
  • Participate in threat modeling, vulnerability remediation, and audit-readiness activities.
  • Work within Agile squads alongside senior engineers, product managers, and global PRE peers in planning, reviews, and release discussions.
  • Document runbooks, SOPs, and engineering guides.
  • Participate in on-call rotations with support and mentorship.
  • Travel 5–10% of the time.
