About The Position

The Software Engineer on Workday’s Business Process Optimize (BPO) team designs, builds, and maintains high-performance microservices and data pipelines for the next-generation Agentic Workflow and Analytics Platform. The platform processes millions of daily requests across more than 100 Tier-0 enterprise customers using Model Context Protocol (MCP) and agent-ready tools. The role involves hands-on work with big-data technologies including Kafka, Spark/Flink, ClickHouse, and S3, and developing scalable services in Python, Java, Go, or Scala. The engineer will help extend distributed telemetry and tracing to AI agent execution paths and collaborate with Product, Data Engineering, SRE, and Legal/Compliance to deliver reliable, low-latency features that scale globally.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of software development engineering experience, including designing, developing, and deploying software solutions, with a focus on production applications and distributed systems.
  • At least 3 years of experience with Python, Java, Go, or Scala.
  • Ability in data partitioning, event-driven streaming, and columnar query optimization for high-throughput data processing and microservice state management.
  • Working knowledge of RESTful APIs, gRPC, and OTLP for scalable microservices and telemetry integration, and understanding of object-oriented design principles including encapsulation, abstraction, and clean API design.
  • Understanding of unit and integration testing, telemetry-based performance monitoring, and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Experience with Git, GitHub Actions, and Jenkins, using standard branching and merge strategies.
  • Proficiency in Python, Java, Go, or Scala, with hands-on experience in Docker, Kubernetes, AWS infrastructure, and Apache Kafka or Spark pipelines.
  • Team collaboration skills, including agile sprints, peer code reviews, and cross-functional problem-solving, and technical writing skills for design specifications, API contracts, integration guidelines, and runbooks.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.

Responsibilities

  • Design, code, and deploy production-ready microservices and streaming pipelines for BPO analytics and agentic engines.
  • Build scalable REST and gRPC APIs for integrations with MCP tools, LLM workflows, and observability frameworks.
  • Optimize high-throughput data ingestion, indexing, and query execution on ClickHouse and distributed event streams.
  • Write unit, integration, and distributed load tests, supporting end-to-end reliability across CI/CD automation pipelines.
  • Monitor, triage, and resolve production issues to maintain high availability and low latency across global customer tenants.
  • Author API specifications, component designs, and operational runbooks.

Benefits

  • The role may be eligible for the Workday Bonus Plan or a role-specific commission/bonus, as well as annual refresh stock grants.
  • Workday states it offers comprehensive benefits; specific benefits are not listed in the posting.
