Software Development Engineer III
About The Position
Blue Origin’s Enterprise Technology team is building digital infrastructure to support the company’s spaceflight mission. This platform engineering role focuses on an AI-powered UI platform that connects enterprise data to user-defined, composable interfaces. The engineer will own critical front-end architecture subsystems and deliver declarative UI workflows, AI code-generation guardrails, and design system tooling for use across Blue Origin engineering programs. The role builds platform capabilities that translate domain-specific language (DSL) configurations and AI prompts into production-grade React and React Native components. It works with design system teams, product engineers, product managers, and internal customer teams to define requirements, deliver platform features, validate designs, and improve the platform based on feedback. The engineer also contributes to technical documentation, system health, testing, telemetry, and guidance for junior engineers. Success in the first 6–12 months includes delivering key AI-assisted UI platform features, establishing automated validation, testing, and telemetry, onboarding internal engineering customers, and contributing to design reviews and front-end engineering practices.
Requirements
- At least 5 years of professional software development experience shipping production-grade web applications.
- Strong technical expertise in modern JavaScript (ES6+) and TypeScript.
- Deep hands-on experience with React, including component lifecycle, hooks, state management patterns, and performance tuning.
- Experience with GraphQL, including query and mutation design, schema consumption, and caching, as well as REST APIs.
- Demonstrated experience owning the technical design and end-to-end delivery of a system, library, or core project feature.
- Experience building reusable UI component libraries, developer tools, or shared front-end platform modules.
- Understanding of responsive layout patterns, cross-browser compatibility, and WCAG 2.1 AA web accessibility.
- Track record of operational excellence, including root-cause analysis, CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and code reviews.
- Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.
Nice To Haves
- Experience with or strong interest in React Native and cross-platform web and mobile architectures.
- Familiarity with Generative AI or LLM APIs, prompt orchestration, or AI-assisted development tools.
- Exposure to compilers, Abstract Syntax Trees (ASTs), Babel/SWC plugins, or Domain-Specific Languages (DSLs).
- Deep understanding of front-end build tooling, monorepo tooling, and bundlers such as Vite, Webpack, or Turborepo.
- Familiarity with Node.js and AWS cloud infrastructure.
Responsibilities
- Own one or more core AI UI platform subsystems and drive their technical design, delivery, and improvement roadmap with general guidance.
- Evaluate near- and long-term technical objectives and balance technical debt against feature delivery.
- Break down complex platform requirements into engineering tasks and provide complexity and schedule estimates.
- Build and maintain capabilities that translate DSL configurations and AI prompts into production-grade React and React Native components.
- Partner with design system teams and downstream product engineers to implement composable component primitives, contract enforcement, and automated validation.
- Implement parsers, validators, and AST-based code-generation routines that ensure generated UIs meet design, security, and accessibility standards.
- Promote modern front-end practices, web technologies, and scalable UI architectures across the team.
- Author technical documentation, runbooks, interface specifications, and architectural design documents.
- Lead root-cause analyses and corrective actions for major technical issues and non-conformances within the platform domain.
- Identify systemic front-end problems and develop developer tooling and automated unit, integration, and end-to-end tests.
- Contribute telemetry and metrics to assess and validate the impact of platform features.
- Serve as a subject matter expert for assigned systems and work with team leads and senior SMEs to validate designs.
- Partner with product managers and internal customer teams to understand pain points, clarify use cases, validate requirements, and iterate on platform capabilities.
- Provide technical guidance to junior engineers, share best practices, and give high-quality code review feedback.
- Drive implementation and delivery of platform features from requirements through production, onboard internal engineering customers, and contribute to design reviews and mentoring.
