Software Build & Release Engineer

Efficient Computer•San Francisco, PA

About The Position

Efficient Computer is hiring a hands-on senior Software Build & Release Engineer to own the GitHub-based build environment used by the engineering team to build, test, and ship software. The role develops and operates CI/CD pipelines, executes testing and release processes, and investigates failures in builds and the infrastructure that supports them. Success means fast and reliable builds, predictable releases, and a clearly documented build system that engineers can understand and use. The engineer will maintain GitHub Actions workflows, runners, and repository automation; manage build compute across providers such as Namespace, Google Cloud, and AWS; and improve build speed, stability, security, and cost. The role also owns testing and release execution, including versioning, packaging, artifact publishing, and release notes. It involves diagnosing failures to root cause, monitoring build and infrastructure health, documenting systems and procedures, and communicating with and supporting engineering teams.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of industry experience in software build, release, CI/CD, or infrastructure engineering.
  • Deep hands-on experience with GitHub and GitHub Actions, including workflow design, self-hosted or third-party runners, and repository administration.
  • Experience with build systems such as CMake and Make.
  • Working familiarity with cloud service and compute providers such as Namespace, Google Cloud, and AWS.
  • Proven ability to triage and debug complex build, test, and infrastructure failures across the stack.
  • Experience executing testing and release processes for production software.
  • Strong scripting skills, for example Bash and Python, and comfort working in Linux environments.
  • Experience writing and debugging C/C++ programs.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a track record of producing documentation that others rely on.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with build caching and remote execution.
  • Familiarity with observability and monitoring tools for CI and infrastructure.
  • Experience with containers and orchestration, including Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Knowledge of software supply chain security practices, such as artifact signing and SBOMs.
  • Experience managing cloud and CI spend.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and maintain the GitHub-based build environment, including GitHub Actions workflows, runners, and repository automation.
  • Manage build compute across providers such as Namespace, Google Cloud, and AWS, balancing speed, reliability, and cost.
  • Improve build times and stability through caching, parallelization, and dependency management.
  • Secure the build environment through secrets handling, access controls, and dependency and artifact integrity.
  • Execute and continuously improve testing processes, including automated test pipelines and reporting results.
  • Run the release process end to end, including branching, versioning, packaging, artifact publishing, and release notes.
  • Reduce flaky tests and manual release steps to make releases repeatable and low-risk.
  • Triage build, test, and infrastructure failures and determine whether causes lie in code, configuration, tooling, or the provider.
  • Debug problems to root cause and implement fixes that prevent recurrence.
  • Monitor build and infrastructure health and act on trends before they become outages.
  • Write and maintain documentation, including build system architecture, runbooks, release procedures, and troubleshooting guides.
  • Communicate build status, incidents, and upcoming changes to engineering teams clearly and promptly.
  • Work with developers to understand their needs and help them use build and release tooling effectively.

Benefits

  • Competitive base salary, generally ranging from $160,000 to $220,000.
  • 10% annual bonus.
  • Meaningful equity.
  • Comprehensive benefits.
  • 401(k) match.
