Mayo Clinic is considering applicants for adult inpatient social work positions at its St. Mary’s and Methodist hospital campuses. Positions may serve hospital units caring for patients admitted for medical concerns, chemical or mental health needs, end-of-life decisions, planned surgeries, unplanned medical trauma, and cancer-directed care. Inpatient social workers assess and support patients’ needs during hospitalization. They complete psychosocial assessments; provide clinical interventions for coping and adjustment concerns; support family members and loved ones; perform mental and chemical health screenings; and coordinate discharge planning. They anticipate barriers, help the care team develop safe dismissal plans, and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and local, regional, and national agencies to establish post-hospital resources. Services are provided in a culturally competent manner. Under the supervision of a social worker who meets state requirements, the position conducts diagnostic assessments, determines clinical interventions, facilitates crisis intervention and psychotherapy, and educates patients and families. The social worker communicates verbally and in writing, participates in treatment and transition planning, functions as a multidisciplinary team member, and works within Mayo Clinic’s research, practice, and education shields. The role follows ethical and NASW standards for healthcare social work, including medical and legal responsibilities, and serves as a resource to allied and administrative staff in Social Work and Nursing.
