About The Position

Reporting to the Program Manager, the Mental Health Assistant will be responsible for supporting clients in the Edith Mac Emergency Men’s Shelter community as a part of our Assertive Community Treatment Team. The program provides emergency housing and housing support services to men 25 and over in the Region of Waterloo who are experiencing homelessness. The program currently operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The Mental Health Assistant will support with standardized assessments, treatment plans and participate in weekly meetings to provide support in shelter to those in need.

Requirements

  • Post-secondary education in Social Work, Social Services, Health Services, or equivalent
  • Knowledge of MS Suite (Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook)
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal, problem solving and organizational skills
  • Age 30 & under (this is a requirement of the Canada Summer Jobs Program)

  • Any experience in a not-for profit environment is an asset
  • Demonstrated cultural competence and the ability to support a diverse client population

Responsibilities

  • Work in collaboration with the program Staff and Case Managers to support treatment plans
  • Support the development of individual wellness plans for complex physical and mental health needs
  • Support recovery and crisis plans
  • Support documentation of client progress if appropriate
  • Participate in monthly staff meetings and treatment/service planning reviews
  • Support good health through the lens of the social determinants of health
  • Identify risk factors to decrease harm
  • Work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team to carry out mental health recovery and support
  • Understand and be able to integrate a client-centered care and Housing First philosophy into daily responsibilities
  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to quality care and service delivery based on SHIP’s Mission and Values
  • Ensure appropriate records are kept and make sure that statistical information is maintained as per agency standards
  • Adherence to agency Health & Safety Program and the Client Safety Framework in the promotion of client safety
  • Perform additional duties as required/delegated by Management
