Requirements

  • Qualified candidates must hold valid licensure for the state they are working in.
  • Colorado: Master’s degree or higher from a regionally accredited institution; and School Social Worker Special Services License issued by the Colorado Department of Education (CDE); and Social Worker License issued by the Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA); or Certified School Social Work Specialist Certificate issued by the National Association of Social Workers.
  • Georgia: Master’s degree in social work; and Georgia certificate with the School Social Worker endorsement issued by the Georgia Professional Standards Commission (GaPSC)
  • Indiana: Master’s degree in social work; and Social Worker License issued by the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency (IPLA); and School Social Worker License issued by the Indiana Department of Education (IDOE)
  • Louisiana: LMSW issued through LA State Board of Social Workers AND Ancillary School Social Work license issued by LDOE. EE will need to a licensed LCSW supervisor in order to receive the Ancillary license.
  • Louisiana: LCSW issued through LA State Board of Social Workers AND an Ancillary School Social Work license issued by LDOE.
  • Michigan: MSW degree and Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) issued by the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) and School Social Work Full Approval and/or Provisional/Professional School Social Worker Certificate issued in the Michigan Online Educator Certification System (MOECS)
  • New York: Master’s degree and School Social Worker License issued by New York State Education Department
  • North Carolina: NCDPI School Social Worker License (can obtain Provisional License for up to 3 years)
  • North Carolina: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Social Work
  • Ohio: Ohio State Board approved license and ODE Pupil Services license w/School Social Worker endorsement
  • Ohio: As of 4/12/21 a candidate can apply for a Pupil Services Registration License. Requirements: must hold a valid Ohio State Board approved license and submit a background check to the ODE.
  • Wisconsin: Master of Social Work degree and Two years of experience as school social worker and written recommendation of the employer, or an internship as a school social worker and written recommendation of the school administration and School Social Worker license

Responsibilities

  • Provide group and individual counseling sessions and classroom support to special education students as mandated per student IEPs, as well as progress monitor IEP goals associated with mandated services and participate in student IEP meetings.
  • Provide group and individual counseling sessions to general education students, as well as monitor the students’ responses to the interventions identified.
  • Develop and monitor student responses to behavior intervention plans, including providing support and consultation to general and special education teachers.
  • Complete psychosocial assessments to assist in the determination of special education services.
  • Conduct functional behavior assessments and communicate the results to all team members in parent-friendly language.
  • Complete risk assessments on students referred for school social work services.
  • Establish relationships with both students and parents and participate in all aspects of school planning.
  • Assist in identifying needed community resources for students and make appropriate referrals to resources to facilitate educational and behavioral interventions recommended for student success.
  • Provide staff consultation on behavioral-emotional-environmental issues affecting student participation in the learning process and collaborate with school staff and other school system personnel in implementing strategies to promote student learning.
  • Provide crisis intervention services.
  • Maintain state-required clinical records and submit appropriate documents for statistical reports with adherence to program standards in school social work.
