About The Position

The Social Work (SW) Program Coordinator serves as the Assistant Director of Outpatient Mental Health within the Mental Health Service at VA Boston Healthcare System (VABHS), a highly complex Level 1A facility. The Outpatient MH division encompasses clinics located across three major medical center campuses and four community-based outpatient clinics that serve Veterans with a wide range of mental and behavioral health problems. The SW Program Coordinator serves as a member of the MH Leadership team, working closely with the Outpatient Mental Health Director and MH Service Line Director to set priorities, develop standard operating procedures, and make decisions about resource allocations within the Outpatient MH division. The SW Program Coordinator works independently and must possess broad clinical, administrative and supervisory knowledge, skills and abilities. The SW Program Coordinator serves as the supervisor for designated clinical team leaders, with responsibility for such duties as establishing workload expectations, completing performance appraisals, and approving/disapproving leave. The SW Program Coordinator also provides direct clinical care, including assessment, psychotherapy, and case management, in one of the Outpatient MH clinics. The SW Program Coordinator may be responsible for additional managerial/administrative or clinical duties as assigned by MH Leadership and may provide coverage for the Outpatient MH Director.

  • Must have a master's degree in social work from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE).
  • Must be licensed or certified by a state to independently practice social work at the master's degree level.
  • Must be proficient in spoken and written English.
  • One year of experience equivalent to the GS-12 grade level.
  • Experience must demonstrate possession of advanced practice skills and judgment, demonstrating progressively more professional competency.
  • Individuals assigned as supervisory social workers must be licensed or certified at the advanced practice level, and must be able to provide supervision for licensure.
  • Must be in overall good health, able to sit at a desk working at a computer, engage in light to moderate physical activity including sitting, walking, bending, and carrying supplies.
  • Applicants must be able to perform primarily light and sedentary duties with occasionally moderate physical demands, exercise patience, and control emotions, with reasonable accommodation if necessary, without endangering the health and safety of the applicant or others.
  • Position requires walking throughout the clinic and the Medical Center, standing for extended periods of time, and involves sitting at a computer and in counsel and consultation with Veterans and interdisciplinary teams.
  • This position also requires close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading; and repetitive motions of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as the Assistant Director of Outpatient Mental Health.

  • Serves as the supervisor for designated clinical team leaders, with responsibility for such duties as establishing workload expectations, completing performance appraisals, and approving/disapproving leave.
  • Provides direct clinical care, including assessment, psychotherapy, and case management, in one of the Outpatient MH clinics.
  • May be responsible for additional managerial/administrative or clinical duties as assigned by MH Leadership.
  • May provide coverage for the Outpatient MH Director.
  • Oversees the daily operation of the program, develop policies and procedures for program operation, and prepare reports and statistics.
  • May be responsible for the program's budget, developing and monitoring staff compliance with practice, standards and guidelines on documentation, workload, data entry, ethical practice and service delivery.
  • Provides analysis and evaluation of clinical program data and computerized programs to identify system-wide trends and needs to enhance the quality of service.
  • Provides supervision for licensure.
  • Coordinates and implements one or more specialty program(s), across the facility.
  • Develops local policy and practice development, procedures, and/or practice guidelines for the program as prescribed by the program handbook or national directive.
  • Organizes work, sets priorities, meets multiple deadlines, and evaluates assigned program area(s).
  • Collaborates with internal and external partners to further program goals and enhance patient centered care.
  • Provides the full range of supervisory duties including assignment of work to be performed; performance evaluations; and selection of staff, training, and recommendation of awards, advancements, and when appropriate, disciplinary action.
  • Oversees the fiscal matters of the functions supervised (including fund controls, contracts, and equipment expenditures), forecasts resource and equipment needs, and administers the allocated budget.
  • Oversees program operations and evaluations, identifying areas for improvement, gathering relevant data, assessing the data, developing and implementing ideas for improvement, and evaluating efficacy of improvement efforts.
  • Initiates and conducts program or service audits and completes designated clinical practice audits and reports, including productivity.
