About The Position

Individuals in this position provide mental health supports for students with disabilities in order for students to fully access academic and behavioral services. The role involves using a trauma-informed approach to provide responsive services to individual students, assist with behavior intervention plans, develop and lead support groups, and teach social skills and coping strategies. The position also requires evaluating and documenting student progress, participating in mediation and conflict resolution, collaborating with special education teachers, providing consultation to school personnel, assisting with professional development and parent communications, maintaining knowledge of community agencies, and conducting self-harm and threat assessments.

Requirements

• Must hold the LMSW, LCSW, or LPC.
• Ability to read, analyze and interpret professional journals, Board policy, administrative procedures and forms and governmental regulations and guidance.
• Ability to complete forms, write reports and engage in written correspondence.
• Ability to present information effectively and respond to questions.
• Ability to speak to students and parents in groups of various sizes, as well as engage in one-on-one communication.
• Demonstrate excellent listening, interpersonal, and non-verbal communication skills.
• Work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference.
• Apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations.
• Solve a variety of problems in many different situations.
• Interpret instructions presented in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
• Apply knowledge of current educational theory and instructional techniques when presenting subject matter to students.
• Draw reasoned conclusions and make professional recommendations supported by data and research.
• Demonstrate executive functions such as planning, organizing, remembering and regulating information and behavior as they pertain to student performance and achievement.
• Identify needs and abilities of individual students.
• Establish and maintain effective relationships with students, staff, parents and administrators.
• Perform multiple tasks simultaneously.
• Maintain confidentiality of student information.
• Perform basic computer functions such as word processing and internet use.
• Use district software, including smart boards, projectors and other instructional technology provided by the district.
• Ability to speak and hear in a typical school environment, which is often noisy and active.
• Ability to read hand written or printed material.
• Consistent and regular attendance is an essential function of this position.

Responsibilities

• Provides responsive services to individual students using a trauma-informed approach to attain good mental health.
• Assists with consistent implementation of positive behavior supports and individual student behavior intervention plans.
• Utilizes data to develop and lead support groups for students with mental health and behavioral concerns.
• Directly teaches social skills and coping strategies to students with disabilities using evidence-based curriculum.
• Evaluates and documents the progress of students toward specific goals and objectives.
• Participates in student mediation and conflict resolution, including utilizing de-escalation strategies.
• Works collaboratively with special education teachers to meet individual student needs.
• Provides supportive consultation services to school personnel.
• Assists with identifying, planning, and presenting building-wide professional development.
• Assists with parent communications/personal connections to address student/family needs.
• Maintains knowledge of and communication with appropriate community agencies and services.
• Assists with coordination of and referral to services with mental health/social service agencies.
• Conducts self-harm assessments and intervenes as appropriate.
• Assists building principals with threat assessments, focusing on the mental health needs of students.
• Collaborates with district outreach team regularly and engages in continuing professional development to maintain licensure.
• Performs other duties as necessary to support the mission and vision of Columbia Public Schools.
