About The Position

The Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program (CPEP) / Mobile Crisis Team Social Worker provides psychiatric emergency assessment, crisis intervention, and disposition planning services across both hospital-based and community-based settings. Services are delivered in accordance with New York State Office of Mental Health (OMH) regulations governing Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Programs (14 NYCRR Part 590) and Mobile Crisis Teams, including Community-Based Crisis Intervention (14 NYCRR 9.58). Social Workers in this role function as core members of the interdisciplinary CPEP team as well as lead clinician in the social workled Mobile Crisis Team. Staff rotate between CPEP and Mobile Crisis Team assignments and are responsible for delivering timely, clinically appropriate interventions to individuals experiencing acute psychiatric crises.

Requirements

  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience in psychiatric emergency services, inpatient psychiatry, mobile crisis, or community mental health preferred
  • Strong clinical assessment, documentation, crisis intervention, and interdisciplinary collaboration skills
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, high-acuity hospital setting and independently in the community
  • Ability to travel throughout the service area
  • Lic Master Social Worker

  • Bilingual or multilingual candidates strongly preferred; proficiency in Mandarin, Cantonese, and/or Spanish is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive psychosocial assessments for individuals presenting to the CPEP
  • Provide crisis intervention, brief counseling, and de-escalation interventions in a psychiatric emergency setting
  • Collaborate with psychiatry, nursing, and other disciplines to develop treatment and discharge plans
  • Coordinate dispositions including inpatient admission, extended observation, and community-based referrals
  • Arrange aftercare services, including outpatient mental health, substance use treatment, and supportive services
  • Engage family members, collateral contacts, and community providers as clinically appropriate
  • Respond to psychiatric crises in community settings including private residences, shelters, street outreach locations, and other public settings
  • Conduct on-site psychosocial, risk, and safety assessments consistent with Mobile Crisis Team standards
  • Provide immediate crisis intervention, de-escalation, stabilization, and brief therapeutic support
  • Determine appropriate disposition, including linkage to outpatient services, referral to higher levels of care, or facilitation of transport to emergency or inpatient settings when indicated
  • Collaborate with law enforcement, EMS, hospitals, and community-based providers as clinically appropriate
  • Develop safety plans and coordinate follow-up and continuity of care
  • Rotate between CPEP and Mobile Crisis Team assignments based on program needs
  • Participate in rotating shifts, including weekends and holidays, as required
  • Participate in team meetings, case conferences, supervision, and required trainings
  • Complete accurate and timely documentation in accordance with hospital and program requirements
  • Maintain compliance with hospital and program policies and procedures
  • Assist in supporting general Emergency Department operations during periods of lower CPEP or Mobile Crisis Team activity, as needed
