About The Position

ProPublica is seeking a two-year temporary Social Video Producer to join its social video team. This role will focus on translating long-form investigative journalism into short-form, video-first content for platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube Shorts. The goal is to build stand-alone editorial products and engage new audiences while maintaining ProPublica's standards and tone. The position reports to the social video editor and is part of the audience team. ProPublica is committed to using visual storytelling as an integral part of its mission to shine a light on abuses of power and betrayals of public trust.

Requirements

  • Proven ability to use video and design skills for journalistic ends.
  • Three or more years of video journalism, content production, and/or video editing experience.
  • Fluency in storytelling for social platforms using text on screen, voice-overs, direct-to-camera, or other methods.
  • Strong understanding of algorithmic trends and platform optimization strategies, including crafting effective video titles, thumbnails, descriptions, and metadata.
  • Experience conducting on-camera interviews and directing video subjects remotely and in person.
  • Proficiency in media production software (e.g., Adobe Premiere Pro, After Effects, CapCut, Photoshop, Figma).
  • Strong writing and editing skills.
  • Ability to communicate social storytelling ideas through scripts or storyboards and advocate for projects with social potential.
  • Experience with project management software (e.g., Trello, Airtable, Notion).
  • Collaborative mindset, stellar communication skills, and ability to work on multiple projects while staying organized and meeting deadlines.
  • Ability to travel as needed for assignments, training, and staff meetings.
  • Eligibility to work in the U.S.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience using a digital asset management system (e.g., WoodWing).
  • Knowledge of media rights and clearances and a working knowledge of copyright permissions.
  • Experience in a newsroom or media organization.

Responsibilities

  • Create video content grounded in ethical journalistic principles, standards, and practices, using editorial judgment to translate stories with appropriate sensitivity and tone.
  • Collaborate with reporters, editors, visual editors, audience team members, and other staffers to identify and produce compelling video storytelling.
  • Manage the entire creative and technical production process for videos, including scriptwriting, editing, gathering visual assets, designing graphics, and writing social post captions.
  • Serve as the on-screen narrator/host, maintaining a voice and approach suitable for ProPublica's brand for explainer-type and host-led video content.
  • Shoot and edit video in studio, remotely, and in the field, ensuring high-quality production values.
  • Identify and edit compelling media clips for various formats (video podcasts, live events, media appearances) and adapt them for social platforms.
  • Manage multiple projects in various stages of production, meeting tight deadlines.
  • Monitor the editorial calendar and pitch ideas for social video content and packages.
  • Define and maintain workflow processes and systems for consistent video content production.
  • Track monthly video analytics reports to inform future optimization and strategy.
  • Monitor evolving trends on video platforms and among audiences, sharing insights with the team.
