About The Position

This role is focused on making video content go viral and growing The Free Press video and podcast audience. The Social Media Video Producer will be responsible for ensuring produced videos achieve maximum reach on social media platforms by identifying viral moments, cutting and packaging clips, writing engaging captions, and overseeing YouTube thumbnails. The role requires close collaboration with podcast, video, and editorial teams to optimize content for distribution.

Requirements

• Obsessed with what makes content go viral
• A news junkie who understands the 24/7 cycle and online political commentary culture—and how to leverage both to drive online conversations
• Strong instincts for hooks, framing, and timing in both horizontal and vertical video (short-form)
• Demonstrated ability to write razor sharp, scroll-stopping copy
• Comfortable with basic video editing (and/or directing editors clearly)
• Someone who loves The Free Press and is enthusiastic to take its video content to the next level
• At least 2+ years in social video, or a clear track record of making content that goes viral
• Experience with editing tools and basic design
• Deep understanding of the independent media ecosystem and what kinds of content break through
• Willing to work nights and weekends when the moment calls for it

Nice To Haves

• Has an eye for graphics and packaging
• Deep understanding/demonstrated ability to learn The Free Press’s singular brand, voice, and ethos
• Experience with Premiere Pro
• Experience with Canva or Adobe Photoshop/Illustrator
• Experience and a hunger to use AI tools, learning from them to improve both tactical and strategic choices for the role

Responsibilities

• Identify viral moments across our video content
• Cut social clips yourself or work with our team of editors to coordinate selects
• Package videos for maximum reach across social media channels, recognizing the subtle differences between platforms and optimizing accordingly
• Write well-developed, scroll-stopping captions and headlines (especially for X, YouTube)
• Create or oversee YouTube thumbnails
• Work closely with podcast, video, and editorial teams to optimize content for distribution
