About The Position

This position serves as a Social Services Aid (YCC) Seasonal at Yellowstone National Park. The role involves providing education, recreation, mentoring, guidance, and oversight to teen enrollees. The typical seasonal entry-on-duty is April-May, but can vary. The anticipated entry on duty is May 2027. The Yellowstone YCC base camp is located in Mammoth Hot Springs, Wyoming. Staff are required to live in the dormitory provided. Work crews primarily camp in front country and backcountry campsites throughout Yellowstone National Park from Monday through Friday. This is a temporary seasonal appointment not to exceed 1039 hours.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
  • Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.
  • Males born after 12-31-59 must be registered for Selective Service.
  • Direct Deposit participation required.
  • Successfully pass the E-Verify employment verification check.
  • Must have and maintain a valid driver's license throughout employment.
  • Required to wear a uniform and comply with uniform standards.
  • May be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and/or shift work.
  • May be required to travel overnight away from home occasionally.
  • Required to camp overnight away from home up to 6 nights per month.
  • Must be at least 18 years old or at least 16 years old and meet specific educational/vocational criteria.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age or older to operate government vehicles.
  • At least six months of general experience and six months of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-03 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: group leader in community or residential recreation or training programs; counselor in a youth summer camp; instructor in a training program for the development of job skills; work that demonstrates the ability to be responsible for and lead and train members of a job crew; group activities leader in the Armed Services; unit leader-monitor-proctor for a dormitory group in a boarding school or other residential facility; aid or assistant to professional or specialist staff in such fields as personnel (private or government), employment guidance in a vocational or academic institution, social service, or manpower development; aid or assistant to professional or associate staff engaged in work of a social services nature in private, public welfare, government program, or community organizations, or in voluntary activities; or aid or assistant to professional or specialist staff working with individuals who are addicted to or abuse alcohol and/or drugs. You must include hours per week worked.
  • OR Successful completion of at least two years of education above the high school level that included at least 12 semester hours of subjects directly related to the work of the position. You must include transcripts.

Responsibilities

  • Provides education and recreation opportunities, as well as, mentoring, guidance, and oversight to teen enrollees.
  • Plans and leads weekend and night recreational activities (day hiking, backpacking, swimming, rafting, park exploration, wildlife watching, fishing, journaling, etc.) including driving.
  • Assists in leading a crew on work projects (such as land-resource projects, trail rehabilitation, fence construction and installation, food-storage box installation, native species conservation, etc).
  • Provides a safe environment (physical and emotional) for self, coworkers, and teen enrollees including identifying and mitigating safety hazards.
  • Mentors and counsels enrollees on personal and shared community living.
  • Serves as a group leader at a residential Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) program.
