About The Position

This is a temporary appointment intended for seasonal work that is less than 6 months or 1040 hours from the date of appointment/service year. It is expected this position will be terminated upon completion of the seasons work. The agency may non-competitively rehire an eligible temporary seasonal worker in subsequent years who works less than 6 months or 1040 hours in their service year. Under the guidance and direct supervision of the Youth Education and Work Program Manager, incumbents direct and coordinate the daily operations of two-month long residential programs serving 62 youths (ages 15-18) through the Youth Conservation Corp (YCC). Oversee work crews assigned to projects and weekend recreational activities throughout Yellowstone. Train/lead staff and enrollees manage the YCC facility and coordinate other youth work program assignments. Responsible for the daily management, administration, and leadership of YCC staff responsible for accomplishing program goals and objectives. Provide resource training to enrollees using the Yellowstone YCC Leadership Curriculum. Responsible for the security, safety, and management of enrollees while on duty. Schedule, assign and assure duties are accomplished (i.e., work projects, time/attendance, performance, food preparation management, equipment/inventories, safety program, purchasing, fleet management, inter-divisional communications, etc.). Mentor and counsel teen enrollees, one-on-one or as a group.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
  • Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.
  • Males born after 12-31-59 must be registered for Selective Service.

  • Must have and maintain a valid driver's license throughout employment.
  • Some locations may require the non-sensitive Tier 1 (T1) background investigation to be or )will be elevated to include the childcare public trust requirement.

  • Must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program.
  • All qualifications must be met by 11:59 EST or when the 'applicant cut-off' is reached (which may be sooner than 10/13/2026).
  • To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST state either "full-time" (or "40 hours a week") or "part-time" with the number of hours worked per week to ensure proper crediting of specialized experience.
  • Failure to adequately provide information needed to determine number of hours worked in each position may result in that time not being credited when evaluating qualifying experience.
  • For periods of time that reflect military service, the DD-214 or Statement of Service is sufficient to meet the full and/or part-time hours requirement as the service dates will be reflected.
  • Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social).
  • Must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 level.
  • Specialized experience that equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to successfully perform the duties of this position.
  • Experience may have been in technical, administrative, or scientific work, fish and wildlife management, recreation management, law enforcement, or other park-related work.
  • Examples of specialized experience include supervising volunteers, interns, and youth work groups and assisting with oversight of seasonal staff.
  • To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent in level of difficulty and responsibility to at least the GS-5 grade level in the federal service.
  • All applicants must have experience with the responsibility and safety of minors while leading or directing residential outdoor youth programs.
  • Must have directed and coordinated daily operations and activities for teenagers ranging from 15 to 18 years of age. (MANDATORY).

Nice To Haves

  • One full year of graduate study in one of the following fields: natural resource management, natural sciences, marine biology/sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, wetlands ecology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources. (One year of graduate education is 18 semester hours or 27 quarter hours).
  • An equivalent combination of experience and education. For example: Six months of specialized experience described in 2A above (50% of the experience requirement), plus one-half year (9 semester hours or 14 quarter hours) of directly related graduate level college study in an accredited institution as described in 2B above (50% of the qualifying education), totals 100% to qualify.
