About The Position

The Suffolk County Department of Social Services is seeking a Social Service Housing Advisor. This role involves assisting in developing permanent housing and various types of emergency shelters, inspecting housing for health and safety compliance, supervising Community Service Workers involved in emergency shelter/motel relocation programs, conferring with property owners on correction of housing violations, attending meetings, and maintaining files of area housing resources. This is a provisional appointment, meaning it is a temporary appointment to a competitive class position for which no eligible list exists or has fewer than three candidates. To become permanent, the employee must take the next examination for the position.

Requirements

  • Graduation from a standard senior high school, or possession of a high school equivalency diploma
  • Three (3) years of experience in the areas of building inspections, building construction, real estate sales or a related field
  • At the time of appointment and throughout employment in this title, employees are required to possess a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State

Responsibilities

  • Assists in developing permanent housing and various types of emergency shelters and inspects such housing for health and safety compliance
  • Supervises Community Service Workers involved in emergency shelter/motel relocation programs
  • Confers with property owners on correction of housing violations
  • Attends meetings as necessary
  • Maintains files of area housing resources
  • Inspects rentals for compliance with health and safety requirements for security
