About The Position

To provide effective Career and Technical instruction in the assigned trade area; to assist assigned students to complete the required competencies for that trade area; demonstrate effective classroom or lab management; ensure that the lab is operated in compliance with all aspects of safety management; and to maintain accurate and current students records for the assigned student.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated ability to engage students in one-on-one teaching and work with students and inmate aides in a classroom/Lab environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain accurate records.
  • Knowledge and experience of policy and procedure governing adult education.
  • Working knowledge of basic adult education field, adult literacy, and computer software appropriate for program needs.
  • Experience in maintaining classroom, equipment, and inventories.
  • Demonstrate competency in the related field of current trade licensure.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • At least two years' full time or 2000 hours of verifiable experience in the last 5 years in the relevant field/trade area for a teaching certificate.
  • Eligible for Technical Professional License issued by Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation (DPOR) and license/certification or a ‘Technical Professional License’ in the related trade area/field issued by Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation (DPOR).
  • Eligible for a teaching certificate by the Department of Education.
  • If you do not currently hold a teachers/trade license from the Department of Education (DOE): You must submit all documentation for your provisional license to the licensure designee for Virginia Department of Corrections (VADOC) during the first 90 days of employment.
  • Obtaining a provisional license within the 1-year probationary period is employee’s responsibility and is required to continuing employment at the Department of Corrections (DOC).

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in correctional education classroom management.
  • Five years experience in the related trade/field.
  • Must have Technical Professional License issued by Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation (DPOR) and license/certification or a ‘Technical Professional License’ in the related trade area/field issued by Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation (DPOR).
  • Must have a Teaching certificate by the Department of Education.
  • Knowledge of all phases of the trade area.
  • Ability to supervise adult inmates in a classroom/lab environment in a correctional facility.
  • Knowledge and experience in correctional education classroom management.
  • Ability to facilitate other instructors.
  • Knowledge of the Department of Corrections (DOC) institutional policies and procedures and policies governing correctional education.
