About The Position

The University of Mary Washington has an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Small Business Associate Consultant. The chief objectives of the position are to provide confidential consulting to SBDC clients, with a focus on helping clients develop marketing strategies and implementation plans; to support SBDC services by moderating and marketing SBDC training events in Planning Districts 16, 17, and 18. (Confidentiality and Conflict of Interest Agreements are required for this position.); and to support Start Up UMW programs for high school and UMW students.

Requirements

  • Strong written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Understanding of principles of marketing, including consumer behavior and decision-making
  • Proficient in developing marketing strategies and implementation plans
  • Self-motivated and able to work well with minimal supervision
  • Ability to work well with others, employ diplomacy and tact, and pursue clarity through appropriate channels
  • Strong computer skills including MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Familiar with the workings of the SBDC network
  • Experience with the development of marketing strategies for real businesses (experience can be paid employment and/or experiential learning opportunities for college credit)
  • Prior experience working with small business owners in an advising capacity
  • Experience with client information management systems
  • Must possess a valid Driver’s License to operate a University/state owned or leased vehicle

Nice To Haves

  • Understands the application of organizational structures and legal liability
  • Comfortable speaking before groups of people in-person and virtually
  • Experience in an SBDC, economic development organization, or university affiliated business support program
  • Experience in using AI for business research

Responsibilities
