About The Position

Under the direction of the Small Business Development Center (SBDC) Director, this position provides business advising services in response to county-wide needs. Incumbents are specialized in small business assistance and advising. The position will be based at a Coconino Community College campus in Page or Flagstaff. Travel throughout Coconino County is required. This is a grant-funded position, and continued employment is contingent upon the availability of funding.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree and 2 years of directly related experience such as business/industry management or small business ownership, or any equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience as approved by the Human Resources Department.
  • Knowledge of: Small business management practices and principles, including small business resources, programs, regulations, financing opportunities, and other information relevant to effective business advising services.
  • Business bookkeeping principles.
  • Assistance with access to capital.
  • Creating marketing plans.
  • Development and analysis of business plans and financial statements.
  • Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Computer accounting software, including QuickBooks.
  • Demonstrated skills and abilities to: Coach or advise small business owners and managers.
  • Understand complex business challenges.
  • Effectively advise and work with individuals from diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds, including a culturally and economically diverse client base.
  • Work independently to complete assigned tasks with minimal direct supervision.
  • Establish good community relations.
  • Speak and write effectively; communicate with small business owners and small business service providers in public and private sectors as well as with civic leaders in multiple settings.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience as a Business Analyst or Advisor, preferably within a Small Business Development Center.
  • Bachelor's or Master’s Degree in Business Administration, Accounting, Marketing, or other related field.

Responsibilities

  • Advises small business clients and provides business assistance services throughout the Service District in accordance with SBA and AZSBDC network guidelines and procedures, including but not limited to: Analyzing the specific business and industry data in finance, marketing, management and operations; Providing guidance in the development of business plans and financial packages; Calculating and interpreting historical and projected financial ratios; Preparing pro forma cash flow and financial statements; Providing guidance on expansion to include employment requirements, foreign markets, and government contracting; Providing mentoring in the development of comprehensive marketing plans; Troubleshooting to identify problems and areas for improvement; Providing information on federal, state, and local regulations and programs. Providing guidance in loan packaging to pre-venture, start-up, or advanced stage existing businesses.
  • Assesses clients’ business needs and circumstances through advising conversations and recommends appropriate courses of action, resources, or referrals based on individual business goals and challenges.
  • Develops a resource network in support of recruiting and referring SBDC program participants.
  • Advises clients regarding business alternatives, available resources, and potential considerations to support informed business decisions.
  • Follows up with clients, as appropriate, to monitor progress toward identified business goals and provide continued advising or referrals.
  • Maintains timely and accurate advising data in the Center IC client information system.
  • Plans, markets, and designs business training workshops, seminars, and special events relevant to participant needs, county needs, and SBDC objectives.
  • Promotes the mission of the Coconino Community College SBDC, Extended Learning Department, Coconino Community College, and Arizona Small Business Development Center Network.
  • Applies SBDC, Arizona SBDC Network, and Coconino Community College policies and procedures.
  • Maintains a positive, respectful, and engaging environment for prospective clients, clients, community members, and co-workers.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Cafeteria Plan: In addition to the base compensation, benefits-eligible employees receive an extra $6,720 per year to put toward benefit costs or to be used as additional take-home pay
