About The Position

The Speech Language Assistant (SLPA) is responsible for providing targeted, evidence-based therapeutic intervention to facilitate student literacy and social engagement within the school environment. In collaboration with the supervision SLP, the SLPA provides student-specific recommendations that promote independence in accessing the learning environment (e.g., reading activities, group activities, community and vocational skills).

Requirements

  • A commitment to working with young people with developmental disabilities.
  • Required: Bachelor's Degree and ASHA Certified as a Speech Language Pathology Assistant; Highly preferred: CDE certificate as an SLPA
  • Experience working with children with developmental disabilities.
  • Experience with Applied Behavioral Analysis.
  • Minimum age of 21; maturity and reliability is a must.
  • Good driving record and valid driver's license.
  • Licensed by the Colorado Department of Education
  • Intermediate to advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite software, Google Suite software and knowledge of data collection platform software.
  • Must pass certification for verbal and physical crisis intervention training (Safety CAre).

Responsibilities

  • Supervise students and care for their physical, emotional health and safety, recognizing their worth, affirming their abilities, and striving to promote dignity in all relationships.
  • Collaborate with Lead Teacher, Specialists (OTs, SLPs and BCBAs), and other classroom staff for creation and implementation of annual goals.
  • Implement communication treatment programs created by the supervising SLP and collect data for each goal with fidelity
  • Provide direct and indirect coaching for staff on communication goals on the IEP as directed by the supervising SLP
  • Prepare therapy materials in collaboration with the Speech Language Pathologist, Lead Teacher, and Case Manager
  • Assist the SLP with speech, language without clinical interpretation.
  • Assist the SLP with assessments in preparation for Behavior Plans/IEPs and to assess ongoing progress, exclusive of administration and/or interpretation.
  • Program and provide instruction in the use of augmentative and alternative communication devices as directed by the supervising SLP
  • Attend and participate in IEP and conferences with the presence of the SLP.
  • Attend all required training and meetings.
  • Successful completion and certification in CALM training is required.
  • Perform other duties assigned by the Speech Language Pathologist and Directors.
