About The Position

A mountain patroller provides emergency medical response and guest assistance while contributing to resort operations and delivering an exceptional visitor experience. The role includes caring for and transporting injured guests, preparing mountain operations and mitigating hazards, supporting avalanche reduction and rescue, conducting lift evacuations, patrolling runs, and completing documentation.

Level 1 includes both entry-level patrollers and patrollers with at least one season of experience. Entry-level patrollers are expected to learn patrol procedures and take on additional responsibilities through training. With appropriate training, they perform emergency medical care, mountain operations setup, avalanche mitigation, lift evacuations, trail patrol, and documentation while providing strong guest service and demonstrating advanced or expert skiing or riding ability.

Experienced Level 1 patrollers can perform the essential duties and responsibilities, accurately complete incident documentation, demonstrate strong risk management, assist with avalanche reduction, and continue learning about snow science and weather patterns. They should be preparing for formal examination in four of the nine disciplines of the in-house professional patroller certification program.

The role requires a current medical certificate (OEC, WFR, EMT, or greater), a high school education or equivalent, advanced or expert skiing/riding ability, good physical condition, rescue-equipment skills, strong communication and emergency decision-making skills, and the ability to pass a federal background check. No related-position experience is required. Minimum age is 21. The current hiring rate is $20 per hour. The Mountain Patroller’s main responsibility is guest service, with regular interaction with patrol colleagues and other mountain and resort departments.

Requirements

• Strong communication skills for guest interactions and radio procedures.

• No related-position experience required.

Nice To Haves

• At least one season of previous patrol experience for the experienced Level 1 patroller designation.
• Preparation for formal examination in four of the nine disciplines of the in-house certification program for professional patrollers.

Responsibilities

• Ski or ride all trails frequently to maintain a visible patrol presence.
• Respond to incidents and administer emergency medical care in accordance with training level.
• Rescue and safely transport injured guests by toboggan.
• Inspect terrain, identify hazards, and mitigate risks.
• Communicate hazards and issues to teams such as lift operations and grooming.
• Perform mountain operations duties, including avalanche mitigation, rope-line setup, and signage.
• Complete required reports, documentation, and records.
• Operate required equipment and vehicles, including toboggans, snowmobiles, and rope systems.
• Assist guests with directions, basic troubleshooting, and conflict resolution.
• Conduct lift evacuations according to guest-safety and documentation protocols.
• Conduct search-and-rescue operations as trained.
• Attend training sessions to maintain certifications and skills.
• Contribute to daily mountain operations under instruction from patrol leadership and Level 4 patrollers.
• Participate in the Patrol In-house Training program to expand job knowledge and performance.
