About The Position

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is seeking to hire two Site Technician II's at Rice Lake State Fish & Wildlife Area for the Office of Land Management. This position will operate vehicles with a total GCWR of 26,001 or more pounds; participate in the operation of trucks, tractors, motor grader, backhoe and farming machinery of 120 hp for site maintenance, improvement, renovation and construction projects on the site’s grounds, waterways, spillways, wildlife habitat areas, canals, and levees; farm for wildlife food production program; repair, build, and monitor the use of artificial nest structures including wood duck houses, bluebird houses and goose islands; provide on-the-job training to new employees and volunteers to familiarize them with site facilities, programs, tools and equipment; build forms for concrete, plow and shovel snow, re-roof/re-shingle buildings, and patch roads. Under direct supervision, performs semi-skilled and routine maintenance, operational and program support tasks at Rice Lake/Double “T” SF&WA. Participates in the routine maintenance of the site's vehicles equipment and tools. Inspects to assure building and gates are properly locked. Inspects public use areas for safety hazards. On an intermittent or seasonal basis provides leadership and direction to seasonal employees, volunteers and other staff. Assists with maintenance of site buildings and grounds. Performs semi-skilled cyclical and routine maintenance work to site buildings. Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Requirements

  • Requires education and experience equivalent to high school graduation and two years maintenance or farming experience preferably associated with the building trades and/or the operation of heavy equipment and machinery.
  • Requires possession of a valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License with air brakes designation.
  • Ability to obtain pesticide/herbicide operator’s license within 6 months of employment.
  • Ability to withstand exposure to the elements on a year-round basis.
  • Physical ability to operate and maintain tools, equipment, and materials utilized in the maintenance, repair, and care of site resources, buildings, and grounds.
  • Ability to lift, carry, and transport loads exceeding sixty pounds.
  • Ability to walk over rough and broken terrain.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain First Aid/CPR certification.

Nice To Haves

  • Working knowledge of tools and equipment used in the trades and/or operation of heavy equipment or farm machinery and implements and/or warehousing.
  • Two (2) years of experience following written and oral instructions.
  • One (1) year of experience informing visitors of site facilities, programs, rules, and regulations.
  • One (1) year of experience in outdoor recreation.
  • One (1) year of experience in groundskeeping.
