About The Position

The Site Technician III/ Lead is responsible for small projects, mowing, weed eating, seeding, planting, weed control, equipment maintenance, snow and ice control, asphalt or concrete work, brick or stonework, demolition, grading, and/or site cleanup tasks. They will assist in field renovations, grading, and/or site clean-up tasks and will assist Facilities maintenance staff on projects assigned. This role requires working independently and exercising good judgment and discretion. As essential personnel, this role is expected to be available during school closings, delays, shutdowns, and emergencies, including severe weather incidents. This includes performing snow removal activities such as shoveling and salting. Employees in the Facilities Management Division are crucial to the success of Liberty University's day-to-day functions, especially during campus events like Winter Fest, Orientation, Convocation, Commencement, CFAW, and summer camps, as well as other planned and unplanned events. Availability for scheduled and unscheduled hours during emergency needs is mandatory. The role reports to the Grounds Supervisor/Manager and/or Director of Grounds. It requires wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and a harness with a lanyard if operating aerial lifts. The position involves working with 2-3 employees and performing various grounds maintenance tasks including planting, routine lawn maintenance, seasonal clean-up, moving materials, digging, hauling, spreading materials, and hand-finishing grade. Chemical application is performed under the direction of a licensed applicator. Equipment maintenance and customer inquiries are also part of the responsibilities. The role requires operating various light/heavy-duty vehicles and equipment. Project completion includes ensuring full inspection, securing equipment, and removing barriers. The Site Technician III/ Lead is responsible for the proper and safe use and maintenance of all equipment, tools, and chemicals. They work closely with the entire Grounds Team on all phases of ground maintenance and support new plantings and removals. Special projects as assigned and staying abreast of emerging technologies are also expected. The role requires working effectively as a team member, embracing and fostering LU’s mission.

Requirements

  • High school degree or GED.
  • Minimum of 5+ years of related experience preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • State Driver’s license and insurable with company’s agent required.
  • Working knowledge of grounds maintenance, and equipment operations.
  • Must have a current CDL or be willing to acquire one within the first year of employment.
  • Must have or exhibit leadership skills and/or have leadership experience.
  • Must be able to understand and follow instructions, and work under limited Supervision.
  • Must be able to work well with the public and co-workers and present a positive attitude.
  • Clean and professional appearance.
  • Must be courteous, detailed oriented, self-motivated, diligent, trustworthy, possess strong organizational skills and well-developed communication skills.
  • Must be able to lift up to 75+ pounds and perform duties of the ground’s maintenance and landscaping outdoors in typical Virginia Climate.
  • Employee must be willing and able obtain aerial lift certifications, operate, and work from various aerial lifts and heights.
  • Have or be able to obtain a chemical spray certification.
  • Must have basic knowledge of occupational hazards and appropriate safety precautions.
  • Proof of a valid Virginia driver’s license, an acceptable DMV record, and liability insurance is required.
  • Must be able to work on weekends, holidays, and flexible daily hours as well as various evening hours.

Responsibilities

  • Perform snow removal activities as assigned, such as shoveling and salting.
  • Report to work at the required time and perform duties as assigned by the Grounds Supervisor/ Manager and/or Director of Grounds.
  • Wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) while operating Grounds related equipment.
  • Wear a harness with a lanyard and other PPE if operating aerial lifts.
  • Perform planting and related activities.
  • Perform routine lawn maintenance including grass cutting, lawn edging, pulling weeds, and other routine lawn-maintenance activities.
  • Provide seasonal lawn care, such as spring and fall clean-up.
  • Move materials and equipment and perform related duties to assist in landscaping and hardscaping.
  • Dig holes and trenches and excavate for landscaping and hardscaping using picks and shovels or related equipment.
  • Haul or spread topsoil, gravel, sand, mulch, or related materials using wheelbarrows and rakes.
  • Hand-finish grade, and apply seed, straw, or sod.
  • Apply chemicals under the direction of a licensed chemical applicator.
  • Maintain assigned equipment and notify Landscaping Supervisor of needed repairs.
  • Operate light/ heavy-duty vehicles, riding mowers, backhoes, and push/ riding mowers, rakes, shovels, blowers, sprayers, chain saws, hydraulic boom, small tools and any other equipment associated with turf care.
  • Ensure projects are fully inspected, all equipment, tools, and materials have been secured and put away, and all blockades, ropes, and tape have been removed upon completion.
  • Perform Grounds duties including weeding, mowing, trimming, edging, planting and other related Ground maintenance activities.
  • Ensure proper and safe use and maintenance of all equipment, tools, and chemicals related to the Grounds team.
  • Work closely with the entire Grounds Teams on all phases of ground maintenance including weeding, mulching, and all other related tasks.
  • Support new plantings and plant removals with the Grounds team, as assigned.
  • Work on special projects as assigned.
  • Remain abreast of existing and emerging technologies, process, products, services and leading industry performance benchmarks.
