About The Position

The Site Safety and Health Officer (SSHO) is responsible for providing safety leadership and oversight on construction projects. The SSHO ensures compliance with company policies, project requirements, OSHA regulations, USACE EM 385-1-1, and other applicable safety standards. Responsibilities include conducting job site inspections, leading safety meetings and training, reviewing Activity Hazard Analysis (AHAs), supporting site-specific safety plans, identifying and mitigating hazards, investigating incidents, and working closely with project management, supervisors, subcontractors, and employees to promote a safe work environment. The SSHO level will be determined based on the candidate’s experience, certifications, technical knowledge, leadership capabilities, and project requirements. Candidates with a minimum of three (3) years of relevant construction safety experience are encouraged to apply. This is an opportunity to play a key role in building and maintaining a strong safety culture across active construction projects. The SSHO will work closely with project leadership, field teams, and clients to identify risks, implement effective controls, and ensure work is performed safely and in compliance with applicable requirements. Requirements

  • Minimum of three (3) years of safety experience in construction, industrial, and/or environmental settings.
  • Experience serving as an SSHO or safety representative on construction projects preferred.
  • U.S. federal, military, or USACE construction safety experience preferred.
  • Valid First Aid/CPR certification or ability to obtain.
  • OSHA 30-Hour Construction or General Industry training, as applicable.
  • Working knowledge of USACE EM 385-1-1, OSHA regulations, and applicable construction safety practices.
  • Ability to conduct jobsite inspections, identify hazards, and recommend effective corrective actions.
  • Ability and flexibility to oversee safety activities across multiple ongoing projects, prioritize competing demands, and respond effectively to project and jobsite needs.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment in the field.
  • Ability to effectively communicate safety requirements to employees, supervisors, subcontractors, and project management.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to meet project-specific safety requirements and training.

Nice To Haves

  • 40-Hour EM 385-1-1 training preferred.
  • OSHA 510 and/or OSHA 500 preferred.
  • BCSP credentials such as STS, STS-C, CHST, ASP, or CSP preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide day-to-day safety oversight and support for construction projects.
  • Conduct routine jobsite inspections, safety observations, and walkthroughs.
  • Identify hazards and ensure appropriate corrective actions are implemented.
  • Develop, review, and maintain Activity Hazard Analysis (AHAs), Accident Prevention Plans (APPs), and other required safety documentation.
  • Lead daily safety briefings, toolbox talks, orientations, and safety training.
  • Monitor high-risk activities, including fall protection, excavation, lifting and rigging, electrical work, confined space, lockout/tagout, and heavy equipment operations.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA, USACE EM 385-1-1, contract requirements, and company safety policies.
  • Assist with incident and near-miss investigations, reporting, and corrective actions.
  • Maintain required safety records, reports, and documentation.
  • Communicate safety concerns and recommendations to project management and the Safety Manager.
  • Support emergency preparedness and response activities.
  • Promote a proactive safety culture and continuous improvement.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
