Site Reliability Engineer

SAIC•Camp Smith, HI
•Onsite

About The Position

Seeking a highly motivated Site Reliability Engineer to support the mission-critical Joint Fires Network (JFN), which enables integration of joint planning, targeting, precision strikes, and communications. The role ensures the reliability, scalability, and performance of JFN while advancing automation and operational excellence. It uses performance metrics and dashboards to monitor reliability, maintainability, and operational availability; identify trends and potential issues; and support data-driven decisions that improve system health and efficiency. This is an on-site position in Camp Smith, Hawaii. The engineer supports operational systems and resources for operations, experimentation, development, and testing. This includes the JFN MLS Operational Architecture—nodes, hub, network, software baseline, and CI/CD apparatus such as IL-7 Cloud—and the JMIE MLS Experimentation Architecture—labs, systems, network, software baseline, and CI/CD apparatus such as IL-5 Cloud. The position maintains availability and reliability across infrastructure and application layers, from system inception through incident resolution, and supports continuous improvement of system management.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree and at least 5 years of experience, or a master’s degree and at least 3 years of experience, or a Ph.D. and 0 years of related experience.
  • At least 5 years of progressive experience in computer science, networking, and information technology, including systems engineering, DevSecOps, and application lifecycle management.
  • Proven experience designing and implementing governance processes for engineering environments.
  • Experience building and maintaining dashboards, alerting, and monitoring solutions that provide real-time and historical observability into system health.
  • Strong Linux/Unix and Windows systems-administration experience in virtualized and cloud environments.
  • Hands-on experience with CI/CD pipelines, configuration management, and deployment automation tools such as Kubernetes, Ansible, Terraform, or Jenkins.
  • Familiarity with cloud infrastructure such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud, and hybrid-cloud deployment strategies.
  • Proficiency with monitoring, logging, and alerting tools such as Alloy, Blackbox Exporter, Prometheus, Grafana, or ELK Stack.
  • Ability to lead cross-functional teams and coordinate with application providers.
  • Strong problem-solving and critical-thinking skills.
  • Excellent communication and presentation abilities, including experience reporting project status to leadership.
  • Familiarity with modern IT frameworks and methodologies such as Agile and ITIL.
  • Understanding of business and technical alignment in support of organizational goals.
  • U.S. citizenship and an active TS/SCI clearance.
  • IAT Level II certification.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure maximum availability, stability, and health of operational systems and required program resources supporting operations, experimentation, development, and testing.
  • Maintain availability and reliability across the infrastructure-to-application stack, from inception through incident resolution.
  • Proactively monitor system health, analyze trends, and predict system behavior to reduce downtime and latency.
  • Serve as an escalation point during incidents, lead troubleshooting, and conduct root cause analysis to reduce Mean Time to Recovery (MTTR).
  • Establish and improve engineering processes and tools for system-status reporting using platform, data, and application-layer logging apparatus.
  • Establish standard operating procedures for using CI/CD pipelines and automated testing tools to audit, verify, update, patch, and manage systems.
  • Develop, maintain, and automate repetitive processes to reduce manual support for daily operational verification and validation of critical operational capabilities.
  • Implement Infrastructure as Code (IaC) to simplify provisioning, scaling, and fault recovery for JFN environments.
  • Establish a communications plan to keep stakeholders, program leadership, and others informed about system status.
  • Identify deficiencies in DevSecOps workflows and design solutions that support technical operations.
  • Profile performance, identify bottlenecks, and implement optimizations.
  • Collaborate with helpdesk staff, network engineers, and system integrators to promote escalation and incident-response best practices and system reliability.
  • Prepare detailed reports and presentations on findings and share insights with stakeholders.
  • Stay current with trends and advancements in automated testing, distributed databases, software-defined networking, container orchestration, and DevSecOps.
