About The Position

As MISO’s Site Reliability Engineer, you’ll help lead the team’s evolution from traditional support work into an engineering discipline focused on application health, automation, and eliminating operational toil. The role calls for a strong software engineering foundation, the ability to understand complex system behavior, and skill in defining and measuring production health. With significant autonomy, you’ll build reusable automation, improve monitoring and visualization tools, and collaborate across teams to enhance the reliability of MISO’s internally developed applications. MISO manages the electricity grid and energy market in the Central U.S., using research and advanced technology to ensure reliable power for 45 million Americans. This position participates in an on-call rotation approximately every five weeks to support critical application reliability. The appropriate level will be determined based on experience and knowledge.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
  • 6–8 years of relevant work experience.
  • Strong software engineering skills in Java, C#, Python, or similar languages, with the ability to learn new technologies and contribute to end-to-end problem solving.
  • Proficiency with Windows and/or Linux command-line tools, including PowerShell and automation-focused utilities.
  • Experience with containerized workloads in Kubernetes environments such as Azure AKS.
  • Familiarity with developer-focused AI tools, such as GitHub Copilot, to accelerate troubleshooting, coding, and automation.
  • Hands-on experience with observability and logging tools such as Splunk, Grafana, Datadog, or New Relic.
  • Strong Git and GitHub Actions skills.
  • Availability to participate in an on-call rotation approximately every five weeks.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of Oracle, MongoDB, or SQL-based databases.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with engineering teams to define SLIs and SLOs and build the observability dashboards, alerts, and tools needed to measure and maintain system health.
  • Develop performance and health visualizations that streamline troubleshooting for support analysts and reduce time to resolution.
  • Improve application visibility through data integrations and visualizations across tools such as Grafana, providing consistent, high-quality insights for internally developed systems.
  • Identify operational toil across support, infrastructure, and release processes, then design automation or process improvements to reduce overhead and scale team capacity.
  • Lead incident response for complex, multi-team issues by diagnosing unfamiliar systems, analyzing logs and source code, determining immediate fixes, and implementing long-term reliability improvements.
  • Participate in an on-call rotation approximately every five weeks to support critical application reliability.

Benefits

  • 401k
  • Vacation
  • Sick and safe time, available on the first day of employment
