About The Position

Etsy’s Runtime Site Reliability Engineering team is hiring a Site Reliability Engineer to build and support reliable, large-scale infrastructure. The team owns business-critical infrastructure and services that help developers build and deliver code efficiently and support the uptime of etsy.com and its mobile apps. The role supports developers in using Etsy’s infrastructure and takes ownership of systems to ensure their reliability, scalability, and maintainability. The SRE team builds and supports infrastructure focused on availability and reliability, with a goal of 99.95% uptime. The engineer will collaborate with SRE colleagues to shape how Etsy builds, deploys, and maintains infrastructure that can scale automatically. The team encourages continuous improvement across systems, including those outside an individual’s direct ownership. This is a full-time role reporting to the Engineering Manager, Runtime SRE. Candidates must be based in the United States. Candidates near Etsy’s Brooklyn Office Hub or in the San Francisco Bay Area may be considered first. Those within commutable distance are expected to attend the office once or twice per week depending on proximity; remote candidates outside commuting distance may be considered case by case, with occasional office travel expected. The role includes salary, an equity package, an annual performance bonus, and benefits supporting employees and their families.

Requirements

  • 2–4 years of software engineering experience focused on systems or infrastructure, network engineering, SRE, or DevOps, ideally in cloud environments.
  • Strong grounding in TCP networking and comfort handling CDN, DNS, CloudNAT, and A record/CNAME configurations across engineering teams.
  • Hands-on experience administering and debugging Linux servers in production to maintain availability and performance.
  • Ability to analyze system logs, metrics, and traces to diagnose performance issues and tune Linux environments.
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms such as GCP or AWS and VM-based architecture designs, including autoscaling and capacity planning.
  • Proficiency with Infrastructure as Code such as Terraform and configuration management frameworks such as Chef or Ansible.
  • Fluency in at least one modern programming language, such as Go, Python, PHP, or Ruby.
  • Practical understanding of SLAs, SLOs, and SLIs, including how to define and apply them meaningfully.
  • Ability to investigate underlying system mechanics and implement long-term fixes rather than quick workarounds.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and deliver solutions to complex, loosely defined problems.
  • Continuous-improvement mindset and willingness to improve systems and existing codebases.
  • Empathy, clear communication, and technical acumen.
  • Ability and enthusiasm to work collaboratively on continuous improvement.

Responsibilities

  • Support daily operations of a large-scale application by monitoring, measuring, and troubleshooting infrastructure and services.
  • Automate upgrade procedures, including operating system and core application upgrades.
  • Manage core infrastructure such as asset delivery, asynchronous compute processing, and scheduled task management.
  • Automate repetitive or burdensome work for teams.
  • Develop automation and processes that enable teams to deploy, manage, configure, scale, and monitor applications.
  • Identify and implement application reliability and availability improvements.
  • Lead and participate in incident resolution using a blameless learning culture.

Benefits
