Simulation Software Engineer Level 2 or 3

Northrop Grumman•Dulles, VA
•$91,800 - $171,000•Onsite

About The Position

Northrop Grumman is hiring a Simulation Software Engineer Level 2 or 3 in its Space Systems organization to develop space simulation software for NSS space programs. The role is based in Dulles, Virginia, and is 100% onsite with no telecommuting. The position works a 9/80 schedule, with every other Friday off, and requires travel approximately 10% of the time. Relocation assistance may be available. The position is contingent on obtaining final clearances and program access within a reasonable period, as determined by the company. Depending on program needs, the engineer will establish simulation requirements; develop spacecraft simulation software and component models; integrate and validate vehicle models and simulations; and develop or integrate system simulation frameworks. The work also supports simulated real-time operations, operational and mission-effectiveness analysis, graphical interfaces and visualization tools, and modeling of thermosphere and exosphere environments. The engineer will conduct computer-simulation trade studies, recommend alternative architectures, and prepare technical documentation, analyses, test results, and presentations for internal and external customers. The position involves collaboration across engineering disciplines and levels. The role requires an active, current, in-scope U.S. Government Top Secret clearance at application and the ability to obtain and maintain Sensitive Compartmented Information access. U.S. citizenship is required. The role may be filled at Level 2 or Level 3 based on experience and qualifications. The posting also lists a separate Principal Simulation Software Engineer qualification profile.

Requirements

  • For Level 2: Bachelor’s degree and 2 years of experience, or a master’s degree, in Software, Electrical, Computer, or Aerospace Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, or a closely related field.
  • For Level 3: Bachelor’s degree and 5 years of experience, a master’s degree and 3 years of experience, or a Ph.D. in Software, Electrical, Computer, or Aerospace Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, or a closely related field.
  • Active U.S. Government Top Secret security clearance at the time of application, current and within scope; ability to obtain and maintain Sensitive Compartmented Information access; U.S. citizenship required.
  • Advanced programming proficiency in C/C++ and Python.
  • Advanced programming proficiency with MATLAB/Simulink and Windows/Linux scripting.
  • Solid communication and teamwork skills.
  • Understanding of waterfall, spiral, and/or Agile software development processes and continuous development/continuous integration practices.
  • Ability to use software revision-control tools such as Subversion and/or Git.
  • Ability to clearly document technical and programmatic status for management.

Nice To Haves

  • System knowledge in one or more of these domains: spacecraft command and control, mission planning, or space situational awareness.
  • Ability to develop and use simulation models of sensors, actuators, and space environments to demonstrate closed-loop spacecraft system performance, and experience with general aerospace systems integration and test.
  • Understanding of Jenkins, Jira (Agile, Scrum, and Kanban), Bitbucket, and related DevSecOps tools.
  • Hardware interfacing, integration and test, and controls experience.
  • Understanding of common embedded-system tools, real-time operating systems, and avionics integration and test practices.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and ability to interface with employees and management at all levels.

Responsibilities

  • Establish simulation requirements.
  • Plan, organize, and participate in the full software lifecycle to develop spacecraft simulation software using modern tools and software best practices.
  • Develop spacecraft component models from hardware documentation to support modeling and simulation across multiple projects.
  • Work with other engineering disciplines to integrate and validate space vehicle models and simulations.
  • Develop new system simulation frameworks and/or integrate existing frameworks.
  • Support simulated real-time operations, operational analysis, and mission-effectiveness analysis.
  • Develop and integrate advanced graphical user interfaces and visualization tools.
  • Model thermosphere and exosphere environments.
  • Perform trade studies using computer simulation and recommend alternative architectures.
  • Prepare design documentation, analyses, test results, and presentation materials for internal and external customers.
  • Collaborate across diverse assignments and teams at all levels.
