Simulation Engineer, Thermofluid Systems

Karman Industries•Los Angeles, CA
•$70,000 - $160,000

About The Position

Karman Industries is seeking a Simulation Engineer to join its core engineering team and develop, run, and analyze high-fidelity simulations of thermofluid and mechanical systems. The work will inform the design and performance of the company’s technology from concept through prototyping and validation, including systems for its Heat Processing Unit, which uses a supercritical CO2 chiller and electrically driven turbomachinery. The engineer will develop and validate multi-domain physics models, collaborate with design and test engineering teams, communicate actionable findings, refine simulation methods, and help correlate simulation results with experimental data. The role focuses on solving complex engineering problems and supporting design decisions through accurate, efficient modeling.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field.
  • At least 3 years of professional experience in a simulation-focused engineering role.
  • Strong foundation in thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and heat transfer.
  • Proficiency in scripting for simulation automation and data analysis using languages such as Python or MATLAB.
  • Experience with 0-D and 1-D analysis methods in multiple domains, such as fluids, thermodynamics, heat transfer, and structural mechanics.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with multi-domain physics simulation packages such as Simulink or Modelica.
  • Experience modeling rotating machinery, multiphase flows, or compressible fluids.
  • Experience with conjugate heat transfer simulations.
  • Hands-on experience with CAD software such as NX or SolidWorks.
  • Track record of taking ownership of projects and delivering results in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and validate multi-domain physics models, analyzing fluid flow, thermal performance, structural integrity, and dynamic behavior of systems and components, including heat exchangers and turbomachinery.
  • Collaborate with design and test engineering teams to iterate on designs based on simulation results.
  • Process, analyze, and present simulation data to the broader team to provide actionable insights for engineering decisions.
  • Develop and refine simulation methodologies to improve predictive accuracy and computational efficiency.
  • Assist in correlating simulation results with experimental test data to ensure model fidelity.

Benefits

  • Long-term incentives in the form of stock options may be available to full-time hires.
  • Medical coverage.
  • Vision coverage.
  • Dental coverage.
  • Access to a 401(k) retirement plan.
