Silicon Photonics Test Development Intern (Summer 2027)

GlobalFoundries•Essex Junction, VT
•$20 - $40

About The Position

This summer 2027 intern or co-op role within GlobalFoundries’ Test Development organization supports silicon photonics semiconductor technologies for high-speed data center, high-performance computing, and hyperscale computing applications. The intern contributes to developing optical and electrical test solutions to characterize photonic integrated circuits (PICs), using laboratory equipment, automated test software, and statistical data analysis. The internship program offers one-on-one mentorship, growth-focused work assignments, professional development opportunities, and networking with executives. Interns and co-ops serve as an entry-level talent pipeline for GlobalFoundries and gain experience intended to prepare them for careers in the semiconductor industry.

Requirements

  • Be at least a sophomore at the time of application and actively pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Photonics, Optical Engineering, or a closely related technical discipline or field through an accredited degree program during the internship.
  • Have an overall GPA of at least 3.0 and be in good academic standing.
  • Be fluent in English, written and verbal.
  • Be able to work at least 40 hours per week during the internship.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior related internship or co-op experience.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience in the workplace, school projects, competitions, or similar settings.
  • Interest in using AI tools and emerging technologies to enhance productivity, streamline workflows, and support effective decision-making.
  • Project management skills, ability to innovate and execute solutions, and ability to navigate ambiguity.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong planning and organizational skills.
  • Advanced programming experience in a Linux environment using Python and C/C++; experience with R or Perl is a plus.
  • Basic understanding of silicon photonics, optical/electrical device characterization, high-speed or mm-wave circuits, statistics, and experimental test methodology.
  • Critical thinking, initiative, accountability, collaboration, and a desire to innovate.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, execute, and document optical and electrical test plans for silicon photonic integrated circuits, including automated data acquisition, instrument control, test sequencing, and analysis in a Linux environment using Python and C/C++.
  • Perform device and circuit measurements, including DC current-voltage (I-V), capacitance-voltage (C-V), optical insertion loss, waveguide loss, wavelength response, fiber-to-chip coupling efficiency, photodetector responsivity, modulator transfer characteristics, and electro-optic bandwidth.
  • Support high-speed and mm-wave characterization using laboratory equipment; assist with calibration, de-embedding, measurement repeatability, and uncertainty checks.
  • Analyze large test datasets using statistical methods to identify trends, outliers, correlations, and sources of variation.
  • Create plots and technical summaries, troubleshoot hardware and software issues, and communicate findings and recommended test-method improvements to cross-functional engineering teams.
  • Perform activities safely and responsibly and support Environmental, Health, Safety & Security requirements and programs.
