About The Position

As a Silicon Photonics Device Engineering Intern, you will support the development and qualification of silicon photonic devices for high-speed optical interconnect and sensing applications in 45nm and beyond. The role focuses on analyzing in-line process data and electrical and optical measurements to identify opportunities to improve device performance, variability, and manufacturability. GlobalFoundries’ internship program provides students with meaningful work experience in the semiconductor industry, one-on-one mentorship, growth-focused assignments, professional development opportunities, and networking with executives.

Requirements

  • At least a sophomore at the time of application and actively pursuing a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Materials Engineering, Photonics, Optics, Physics, or a related field through an accredited degree program during the internship.
  • At least a 3.0 overall GPA and good academic standing.
  • English fluency, written and verbal.
  • Ability to work at least 40 hours per week during the internship.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior related internship or co-op experience.
  • Demonstrated prior leadership experience in the workplace, school projects, competitions, or similar settings.
  • Strong interest in using AI tools and emerging technologies to enhance productivity, streamline workflows, and support effective decision-making.
  • Project management skills, including the ability to innovate and execute solutions and navigate ambiguity.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong planning and organizational skills.
  • Coursework, research, internship, or project experience in silicon photonics, photonic device physics, semiconductor processing, or optoelectronic characterization.
  • Experience analyzing electrical, optical, or semiconductor manufacturing data; scripting or coding in Python or R; or familiarity with statistical analysis, data visualization, Design of Experiments, or Statistical Process Control.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze in-line process, electrical, and optical measurement trends for silicon photonic devices.
  • Support evaluation of process or device-design improvements intended to reduce variability and improve optical and electrical performance.
  • Assist with identifying measurements that better predict final silicon photonic device figures of merit and enable updated tests for new test structures.
  • Perform data mining, correlation, and statistical analysis across process, electrical, and optical datasets.
  • Document methods and communicate findings through technical reviews.
  • Perform all activities in a safe and responsible manner and support Environmental, Health, Safety & Security requirements and programs.
