About The Position

Under general supervision, performs skilled electrical and electronic maintenance duties involving the installation, maintenance, repair, troubleshooting, and adjustment of traffic signal systems, street lighting systems, and related electrical infrastructure for the Public Works Department. Performs preventive and corrective maintenance to ensure the safe and reliable operation of the City's transportation infrastructure. This position also serves as an integral member of the on-call after-hours emergency standby rotation program. The Signal Technician I is an entry level classification. Employees in this role perform a variety of skilled tasks related to the installation, maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting of traffic signal and street lighting systems while working under general supervision. Employees in this classification are expected to develop proficiency in maintaining and repairing traffic signal controllers, detection systems, communication equipment, street lighting systems, and related electrical infrastructure.

Requirements

  • Possess a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Two (2) years of experience in the installation, maintenance and repair of electrical control devices or electrical installation of relevant equipment
  • Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license is required
  • IMSA Associate Traffic Signal Technician Level I Certification is required within one (1) year of appointment
  • Bucket Truck Operator Certification is required within one (1) year of hire
  • Ability to work independently in the absence of or minimal supervision
  • Ability to organize and prioritize tasks to meet deadlines
  • Ability to make sound decisions
  • Ability to perform responsible maintenance and repair work on traffic control devices and lighting systems

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with traffic control devices is desired
  • MSA Technician and Specialist Certifications are desirable upon hire or must be obtained within one (1) year of hire
  • IMSA Certification and training in Traffic Signal Maintenance/Inspection is desirable upon hire or must be obtained within (1) year of hire

Responsibilities

  • Installs, inspects, tests, maintains, troubleshoots, repairs, and replaces traffic signal systems, street lighting systems, flashing beacon systems, radar speed feedback signs, vehicle and pedestrian detection systems, and related electrical infrastructure.
  • Performs preventive and corrective maintenance on traffic signal controllers, cabinets, signal heads, communication equipment, street light circuits, luminaires, poles, conduits, wiring, and associated electrical components.
  • Diagnoses electrical, electronic, communication, and control system malfunctions using specialized testing equipment and implements corrective actions.
  • Installs, programs, configures, updates, and repairs traffic signal controllers, communication devices, vehicle and pedestrian detection equipment, flashing beacon systems, radar speed feedback signs, and related hardware and software.
  • Performs underground utility locating, conduit installation, cable installation, wiring, and electrical connections for transportation electrical systems.
  • Responds to emergency service calls involving traffic signal malfunctions, street light outages, flashing beacon failures, radar speed feedback sign malfunctions, power outages, vehicle accidents, knockdowns, and other electrical emergencies.
  • Coordinates maintenance, repair, and construction activities with contractors, utility companies, developers, consultants, and other City departments.
  • Implements temporary traffic control measures and assists with traffic control during maintenance, emergency response, and construction activities.
  • Maintains accurate records of inspections, maintenance activities, repairs, equipment inventories, work orders, and materials used.
  • Operates and maintains bucket trucks, service vehicles, aerial lifts, specialized testing equipment, power tools, and other equipment necessary to perform assigned duties.
  • Ensures compliance with City policies, Cal/OSHA regulations, the California Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (CA MUTCD), the National Electrical Code (NEC), and other applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Participates in the after-hours emergency standby rotation and responds to emergency call-outs as required.
  • Establishes positive working relationships with representatives of community organizations, state/local agencies, City management and staff and the public.
