About The Position

Responsible for ensuring effective communications between all parties including faculty, staff and students, which includes simultaneous voice interpreting for some individuals and simultaneous or consecutive sign interpreting for others. This position would include working with a high school age student.

Requirements

  • High School diploma required.
  • Level III VQAS (Virginia Quality Assurance Screening) or above (scale I-IV).
  • Two years of experience as a sign language interpreter, preferably in the educational setting.
  • Knowledge of working with students who have additional physical, cognitive, emotional, and behavioral challenges.
  • Able to work with people who are unfamiliar with working with deaf or hard of hearing students.
  • Able to work with people who are uninformed regarding the use of an interpreter.
  • Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal.
  • Frequent walking, standing, lifting up to 50 pounds unassisted, and other physical activities are required.
  • Movement of students by wheelchairs and other mechanical devices may be required.
  • Occasional lifting of equipment such as audio-visuals, regular stooping, kneeling, crouching, and reaching and significant pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions are also required.
  • Required to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment, such as, but not limited to a, personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine.
  • Interpreters are prone to developing Repetitive Motion injuries due to excessive wrist, arm and shoulder movements.
  • May require standing for long periods of time.

Nice To Haves

  • Four year degree from an Interpreter Training Program or a major in the field of Deafness is preferred.
  • RID National Certification, CI/CT preferred.
