About The Position

Under the direct supervision of a certificated teacher, the Sign Language Aide assists in the instruction and supervision of students who are deaf or hard of hearing. This position requires the aide to interpret and relay information between students and staff, and to facilitate communication within the classroom and school environment. The aide will also support the teacher in implementing individualized education programs (IEPs) and providing a safe and supportive learning atmosphere.

Requirements

High school diploma or GED.
Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL).
Ability to interpret and translate spoken language into sign language and vice versa.
Experience working with children, preferably in an educational setting.
Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
Good communication and interpersonal skills.
Patience, empathy, and a genuine desire to help students with hearing impairments.

Nice To Haves

Associate's degree or higher.
Previous experience as a sign language interpreter or aide.
Knowledge of special education principles and practices.
Certification in sign language interpretation (e.g., RID certification).

Responsibilities

Interprets and relays information between deaf or hard-of-hearing students and staff, using sign language.
Assists the teacher in implementing lesson plans and instructional activities.
Supervises students during classroom activities, breaks, and transitions.
Supports students in developing communication and social skills.
Assists with the physical and personal care needs of students as required.
Maintains a safe and orderly classroom environment.
Documents student progress and behavior as directed by the teacher.
Collaborates with the teacher and other school personnel to support student learning and well-being.
Participates in professional development activities as assigned.
