About The Position

Tarte is seeking a hands-on Shopify Developer to build and maintain shopping experiences for its global beauty brand. The role covers product launches, influencer activations, and everyday ecommerce experiences. The developer partners with Engineering, Design, Product, Merchandising, Marketing, and Operations to take features from idea through launch, while sharing knowledge and helping non-technical teammates use Shopify admin and backend tools. This is a hybrid position based in New York City, with two days per week in the office required. The developer will create and maintain custom Shopify themes, templates, sections, and interactive components using Liquid, JavaScript, HTML, and CSS, supporting product detail pages, collection pages, cart, and customer accounts. The role also includes developing promotional features such as gift-with-purchase offers, bundles, discounts, and merchandising functionality; improving search, filtering, and product discovery; and optimizing performance, accessibility, mobile responsiveness, and Core Web Vitals. The developer will implement and maintain third-party applications, Shopify APIs, and custom integrations; own assigned features from technical requirements through testing and release; troubleshoot production issues; participate in code reviews and deployments; and work with QA to ensure reliable releases. AI-powered development tools are used to improve productivity, troubleshooting, code quality, and workflow efficiency, while exploring practical ways AI can enhance the shopping experience.

Requirements

At least 5 years of Shopify development experience; Shopify Plus and direct-to-consumer ecommerce brand experience are preferred.
Strong proficiency in Shopify Liquid, HTML5, CSS3/SCSS, and modern JavaScript (ES6+).
Experience with Shopify Online Store 2.0, metafields, metaobjects, theme customization, and Shopify Admin/Storefront APIs (GraphQL).
Ability to build reusable frontend components, implement complex shopping logic, and integrate third-party services using REST or GraphQL APIs.
Experience with Git, pull requests, code reviews, debugging, and release workflows.
Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
Ability to work cross-functionally and communicate clearly with technical and non-technical partners.

Nice To Haves

Experience with React or other modern frontend frameworks.
Familiarity with Shopify Functions, Checkout Extensibility, or customer account extensions.
Experience with AWS/serverless infrastructure, webhooks, or custom backend integrations.
Familiarity with AI-assisted development tools such as Codex or Claude Code.
Experience working within founder-led, DTC, beauty, fashion, or lifestyle brands.

Responsibilities

Build and maintain custom Shopify themes, templates, sections, and interactive components using Liquid, JavaScript, HTML, and CSS.

Use AI-powered development tools to improve productivity, troubleshooting, code quality, and workflow efficiency, and explore ways AI can improve the shopping experience.
Share knowledge and help non-technical teammates build skills and confidence with Shopify admin and backend tools.
