Shop Safety Manager
About The Position
Midsouth Steel is seeking a hands-on, detail-oriented Shop Safety Manager to support and enhance safety operations across two neighboring fabrication facilities. The role is critical to maintaining a strong safety culture, ensuring regulatory compliance, and protecting employee well-being in an industrial environment. The manager serves as the primary safety representative for shop and office new hires, provides safety orientations and training, partners with company Safety Managers to improve and enforce safety practices, and oversees audits, OSHA records, emergency evacuation plans, and safe loading practices. The role also supports employees with work-related medical care, including attending appointments when necessary.
Requirements
- OSHA 30 or OSHA 511 Certification (General Industry – 29 CFR 1910) is required.
- Knowledge of incident investigation.
- Strong understanding of Experience Modification Rate (EMR) and its impact on workers’ compensation.
- Prior experience in a fabrication or machine shop environment.
- Equipment certifications, or the ability to obtain certifications and train others, for overhead cranes, forklifts, plasma cutters, and welding equipment.
Nice To Haves
- Additional safety certifications will be considered.
- Bilingual in English and Spanish is a plus.
- Train-the-trainer experience is a strong plus.
Responsibilities
- Serve as the primary safety representative for shop and office new hires during onboarding.
- Deliver job-specific safety orientations.
- Ensure employees understand and commit to all safety policies and procedures.
- Partner with company Safety Managers to evaluate, improve, and enforce shop safety practices.
- Conduct shop audits and address safety concerns based on audit findings.
- Maintain and manage OSHA logs and ensure accurate, timely reporting.
- Oversee and regularly review emergency evacuation plans for shop and office environments.
- Provide shop employees with safety training on machinery, tools, and equipment.
- Ensure safe loading practices and compliance standards are met for company transport trucks.
- Support employees with work-related medical care, including attending appointments when necessary.
