About The Position

Six Nations Polytechnic (SNP) is seeking a Shop Assistant to support the effective delivery of Skilled Trades programming. The position contributes to a safe, efficient, and high-quality learning environment by supporting shop operations, maintaining equipment and facilities, and responding to the day-to-day needs of programs. The Shop Assistant provides operational and administrative support by preparing materials and equipment for hands-on learning activities, maintaining accurate inventory records and an organized, functional shop environment, and promoting safe work practices in accordance with WHMIS and Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) standards. The Shop Assistant is required to perform all duties consistent with the governance values and operating policies of Six Nations Polytechnic (SNP) while fostering positive relations with staff, students, stakeholders, and the community; contributing to a culturally supportive teaching, learning and work environment consistent with Hodinǫshǫ:nih/Rotinonhson:ni values of Ga’nigohi:yo:/Kanikoriio (Respect and the Good Mind).

Requirements

  • Completion of high school.
  • Completion of introductory studies in industrial skilled trades such as welding or machining is required.
  • Up to and including 1 year of experience in a skilled trades environment (such as welding, machining, or a related field) is required to independently carry out the full responsibilities of the role.
  • This experience must include hands-on work with tools, equipment, and shop safety practices.

  • Original Criminal Background Check – Vulnerable Sector Screening that is satisfactory to Six Nations Polytechnic (SNP) prior to the first day of work at Six Nations Polytechnic, and an Offence Declaration that is satisfactory to SNP by their first day of employment at Six Nations Polytechnic.

  • Prior experience working for an Indigenous organization is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assisting inventory control systems for tools, equipment, materials, and PPE
  • Assist with receiving, tracking orders and deliveries
  • Maintaining tool sign-in/sign-out systems for students and instructors
  • Ensuring accurate records of inventory and shop supplies
  • Ensuring proper storage and upkeep of equipment and materials
  • Supporting day-to-day operations of the shop environment
  • Preparing materials and equipment for instructional use
  • Assisting students with the safe use of tools and equipment
  • Maintaining shop cleanliness, organization, and housekeeping standards
  • Identifying hazards and addressing safety risks
  • Performing routine inspections and reporting equipment issues
  • Responding to JHS inspection findings
  • Supporting funding applications and gathering required documentation
  • Assist in the development and maintenance of an annual work plan
  • Promoting a respectful, collaborative, and culturally supportive learning environment consistent with SNP values
