This position is primarily responsible for designing, fabricating, repairing, and maintaining metal sheet structures on rigs, ships, and barges. Work includes welding metal components to repair broken or cracked parts in crane buckets, ship holds, and similar structures. Duties may vary by assigned department and not all duties may be performed by every incumbent. The role involves inspecting, measuring, adjusting, and testing completed metal work; reading blueprints, work orders, and production schedules; assembling and aligning components; operating and maintaining welding equipment; heating and grinding metal; fabricating and fitting substrates; and monitoring the welding process to avoid overheating or damage. The employee must follow safety procedures and maintain a safe, clean work environment. Work may take place inside or outside, around water, in confined spaces, and in heat, cold, wet, humid, dusty, or dry conditions. Some facilities may require 5%–20% travel, including off-site training or work at alternate locations. Louisiana employees need reliable transportation to work sites, with locations depending on business needs and typically covering the listed parishes.
