About The Position

Howmet Aerospace is hiring a Shipping/Receiving Operator for its Industrial Gas Turbine group in Hampton, Virginia. The role coordinates activities related to verifying and recording incoming and outgoing shipments and preparing items for shipment. It also coordinates departmental activities to meet objectives aligned with plant goals. The position is scheduled for second shift, Monday through Friday, 4 p.m. to 12 a.m.; applicants must also be available for other shifts, including third and weekend shifts, as operational needs vary.

The new-hire starting rate is $19.70 per hour, increasing to $21.89 per hour after six months. Employees assigned to an off shift receive a $1.00-per-hour shift premium.

Requirements

• At least one year of related experience and/or training.

• Ability to work overtime and weekends as schedules vary with operational needs.
• Legally authorized to work in the United States; employment eligibility verification is required at hire.
• Ability to lawfully obtain access to export-controlled items; employment offers are conditioned on this ability.
• Understand shipping notices, bills of lading, invoices, and government import-export regulations.
• Read and interpret EHS policies, operating and maintenance instructions, and activity instructions; write routine reports and correspondence; and speak effectively before groups of customers or employees.
• Prepare and recommend departmental budget requirements and use Excel spreadsheets to prepare management reports.
• Perform arithmetic using whole numbers, fractions, and decimals; calculate rates, ratios, and percentages; and draw and interpret bar graphs.
• Solve practical problems, interpret written, oral, diagrammatic, and schedule-based instructions, and exercise independent judgment.

Responsibilities

• Ensure inventory accuracy for raw materials under the position’s control.
• Interpret shipping notices, bills of lading, invoices, miscellaneous shippers, and other records to determine priorities, work assignments, and shipping methods needed to meet schedules.
• Apply knowledge of domestic and international shipping and online shipping methods.
• Ensure compliance with Department of Transportation regulations.
• Classify and label hazardous-material shipments correctly.
• Ensure compliance with import and export regulations and submit export paperwork to freight forwarders.
• Determine shipment space requirements and placement in trucks.
• Determine routing and truck legal load limits in accordance with schedules and state weight limits; schedule customer-funded trucks and expedited shipments as needed.
• Inspect loading operations for compliance with shipping specifications and seal loaded truck doors.
• Inspect material-handling equipment for defects and notify maintenance personnel or outside service providers about repairs.
• Maintain vehicle maintenance reports.
• Direct shipment movement from shipping and receiving platforms to storage and work areas.
• Maintain inventory of shipping supplies, including boxes, packing materials, tape, labels, and special supplies.
• Develop and recommend annual Warehouse and Receiving Department budget requirements, including anticipated personnel and material-handling equipment needs.
• Establish project plans and coordinate continuous-improvement initiatives.
