About The Position

The Shift Manager is responsible for managing multiple departments during their shift, directing the activities of Superintendents to ensure product meets customer and complex production requirements. This role involves scheduling and time off for direct reports, making decisions on applicant selection, interviews, and progressive discipline. The Shift Manager provides backup support for the Director of Operations and assumes responsibilities when leadership is unavailable. Key focuses include managing production schedules, promoting a safe work environment, fostering a continuous improvement culture, achieving quality standards, and effective communication across all levels and departments. This role also involves direct management of employees, including screening, interviewing, hiring, administering disciplinary actions, and recommending compensation decisions, all while upholding company values to maintain positive employee relations and morale.

Requirements

  • 3 years of experience in food or poultry processing with supervision in multiple plant functional areas.
  • Experience in food processing organizations.
  • Ability to enter and locate information on a computer.
  • Ability to visually verify information, often in small print.
  • Ability to communicate with Customers, Vendors, or Employees via telephone, in person, and/or electronic mail.
  • Ability to present information to small or large groups.
  • Must be able to work in various temperatures.
  • Ability to move about in a manufacturing environment and surrounding property.
  • Ability to travel to and from multiple facilities, work-sites, or customer locations, possibly requiring overnight stays.
  • Bachelor's degree in Poultry Science, Agriculture or related field, or 4 years related work experience.

Responsibilities

  • Manage multiple departments on a shift.

  • Responsible for scheduling and time off for direct reports.
  • Make decisions in selecting applicants, interviews, and progressive discipline.
  • Provide backup support for the Director, Operations.
  • Assume responsibilities while leadership is off site or unavailable.
  • Participate and help manage the scheduling of production and work activities to meet established goals and expectations.
  • Emphasize and promote a safe work environment, complying with all policies or regulations set forth by Simmons, OSHA, or various government agencies concerning safety, environment, handling of food products, packaging, ingredients and any related items.
  • Develop a continuous improvement culture for direct reports and their responsibilities to improve processes and drive out waste.
  • Accomplish quality performance that meets or exceeds all line, department, facility, company, and USDA/FDA guidelines or grading process for a total quality program and customer relations.
  • Communicate at all levels to meet production expectations.
  • Monitor quality, safety, scheduling, personnel, and mechanical status of the plant.
  • Collaborate with functional areas of operations such as Human Resources, Safety, Maintenance, Quality Assurance, Finance, Shipping, etc.
  • Communicate effectively at all levels to provide appropriate directives and to resolve employee problems/conflicts.
  • Manage employees, directing and supervising their work activities and monitoring work performance.
  • Collaborate with Human Resources to screen, interview and hire candidates.
  • Administer disciplinary actions and recommend performance improvement actions in collaboration with the HR Manager.
  • Monitor work performance and recommend compensation decisions based on guidelines.

  • Promote a cooperative and harmonious environment to facilitate positive employee morale, productivity, and continued improvement.
