About The Position

This is a department promotional examination for eligible employees of the Kern County Sheriff's Office who have completed their initial probationary period and received an overall rating of standard or better on their most recent employee performance report. The examination will establish a 12-month eligible list for appointments as needed. Applicants must be willing to work any shift in a 24-hour period and any five days of the week. Evening shift work receives 5% additional pay, and night shift work receives 7.5% additional pay. The written examination is weighted 100% and may assess supervision and training techniques, reading and analyzing information, writing and reviewing reports, scheduling, and record keeping. Applicants must score at least 70% on each examination phase. If there are too few candidates to warrant a written exam, the Human Resources Division may conduct an appraisal of application materials instead. Promotional examination components are administered at their scheduled dates, times, and locations without exception. The role requires one year of experience as a Sheriff's Detentions Senior Deputy with Kern County and a valid PC 832 firearms certificate. A valid Class C California driver's license is required at appointment; specialized licenses may be required for some assignments. A background check may be conducted, and post-offer medical and drug screening may be required at County expense. Kern County emphasizes purposeful public service, employee growth, innovation, training, and continued professional development. The Sheriff's Office seeks qualified individuals of high moral character who are ethical, trustworthy, and professional. Its ideal-candidate pillars include integrity and honesty, decision-making and judgment, social and cultural sensitivity, stress tolerance, conscientiousness, interpersonal skills, and communication skills.
